Are some companies above criticism?
on: June 23, 2017, 02:16:42 PM
Some companies seem to be above criticism.

Whereas certain companies can be bashed and badmouthed continuously (sometimes for no reason), with nobody complaining, some companies can not be criticized, even when they do something seriously wrong.  They get a lot of people justifying their behaviour and every bad thing they do seems to be ignored by most.
They are considered as "naughty" whereas other companies doing the same would have been considered "criminal".

I am thinking beyond just  multitool, knife companies.

There is a lot of bias in the modern world. One company or group of people will be criticised more harshly than another who are exhibiting the same failings.

Two companies produce a bad tool, and one has either let their guard down, or has teething problems with a new tool, or is justified in their approach for a number of reasons. The other company is just hawking the same useless crap as always. There will be different people who adopt the relevant standards for each company.

Yes, this transcends tool companies, and goes for other products too... cars, electronics, IT, service providers, clothing, food products... It transcends into social aspects too. Not just in terms of politics, and which group of rioters are justified, and which aren't, but lower animosity topics too, like cyclists and motorists....

We often tend to be more forgiving and accepting of those with whom we feel most aligned (for whatever reasons), and more critical of those who proceed along a different philisophy to ours, even if they do no ill. We always have, we always will.

Humans are pack animals, and even though we generally consider ourselves to have elevated beyond that, we haven't. Be it political leanings, football team, place of birth, fashion sense, music, hobbies, vocation, we form cliques where we are right and others are wrong. Occasionally we'll get disillusioned and jump ship, only to start forming new allegiances with people who share our new philisophy, and group psychology starts over again.

It's not the company who is above criticism, it's the public not thinking freely enough - though this can also be the case when the company is being overly criticised. I pride myself on trying to be a freethinker, and some of my knives and tools are very popular ones, and some aren't. I am however accutely aware that I am not immune to group psychology, and in life in general, have to continually reappraise my thinking to see if it is free enough or stifled and unduly influenced.

In my opinion, no.

Every company, just like every person makes mistakes, and the whole point of this site is to allow people their own say.

Otherwise, why have a forum at all?  And, if you don't like it, there are plenty of forums and Facebook pages for people who aren't open minded out there, where everyone agrees on everything.  :D

I learn more from reading criticism of specific products rather than criticism of their manufacturers.
