Bayonet for Swiss Sturmgewehr 90
on: June 26, 2017, 05:27:33 PM
We all are familair with the bayonet for the Swiss Stgw 90 rifle, aren't we!?  >:(

This SAK bayonet was made by Wenger and Victorinox. The first batch was individually numbered. After a few thousand (I don't know how many exactly) the individual number was dropped.
Are the numbered specimens different from the unnumbered? The answer is YES, they are!
I have a specimen of both types and today I decided to unscrew the plastic handles.
On the outside they look the same but on the inside they differ.
The new type has:
- some extra reinforcements inside,
- the number '94' is hot stamped on the inside were (while the numbered specimen has a sort of handwritten '89')
- the blade is stamped '95',
- the front hole is smaller,
- a finer finish of the blade.

More pics will follow soon.

Isn't the Stgw 90 just a Sig SG 550?

Also, shouldn't the swiss bayonet be a Mora with duct tape? (in case of confusion, there was a thread recently about someone selling an old Mora with the description "Swiss army fighting knife")

Yes and no. The Stgw 90 is the Swiss military designation for the SIG 550 with a 1:10 barrel twist rate for the 5.6mm Gewehr Patrone 90, and with a 4 settings fire selector.

I opened mine as well. One with only Victorinox, no serial number.
All stamped with the year 90.
So probably 89 was the last year with serial number.

Stunkel, thanks for opening up your bayonet!
My guess is that the numbered specimens were a sort of pre-production type, made for 'Truppenbeprüfung' or something alike.
The one with the number I have, was actually handed out to a Swiss soldier. There are some traces of slight use. I got it from a Swiss Ordnance Officer.
The internal reinforcements of the slabs were probably done as a result of the Troop Trials, as was the adaption of a slightly smaller front hole, what makes the blade stronger and a little bit more 'forward heavier'.

Anyway, again something more to collect!
