Cutting stranded cable with Spirit
on: February 13, 2007, 12:50:05 AM
My Swiss spirit is unable to cut through small stranded cable (like bicycle derailleur cable) and the strands will get stuck in between the plier jaws causing the pliers to get stuck together. Is this normal? I know that my SOG powerlocks can cut that same stranded cable without a problem. I have mailed the tool to the Connecticut repair facility in the beginning of January but have not heard anything about the repair status, so am just waiting. Not sure if anything can be done about this.

I had a similar problem not too long ago, and I found that very few, if any of the tools in my collection managed to handle steel cable very well.  The stuff I was cutting was similar sized to bike derailleur cable.

Victorinox is often non- communicative, but I'm quite certain that your Spirit will show up (likely a replacement) on your doorstep soon enough.  If you have any concerns, or just want to know for peace of mind, I believe there is an 800 number on the Vic website.

Welcome jscalia. Stranded steel cable is among the toughest challanges a multitool can face. I haven't done much expirementing myself with it, but I've read that others have had good success with the SOG's where other tools have been unsuccessful.

Under the base of the pliers, there is a stranded wire cutter and an electrical crimper. I obtained this pic from equipped.org:

I think the whole thing is due to the edge of cutter edge is rounded or flat. If they were sharpened to an obtuse angle, say 50°, it'll bite into the steel and won't slip and stuck.
