sak springs
on: October 17, 2008, 06:25:17 AM
How long can a sak be on display with most if not all of it's implements out half way without damaging it's springs?

Oh this being my fist post I'd like to say a few things about this forum and the community. I've been skulking around here for a long time now and have gained a lot of knowledge. Sosak was discovered by me through this forum and most of the articles there have been read there as well. Only good things to say and good people to meet from here on, hope that I can contribute something to this forum as well.

I have a small sak collection my self, my first sak was actually not a sak but a swiss tool x which I love and have to this day. That purchase has been made 6 or 7 years ago when I was doing my army service. The guy at the store had the latest offerings from letherman, gerber, sog and of course victorinox. The moment I picked it up it was love at first sight errr feel more like it I mean if you held one you know what I mean that thing feels solid. Since I've been back a vic soldier and wenger si followed and a few other models both for my own collection and gifts. One of the things I've learned so far (thx Def) when in doubt buy both, my wallet is not happy but my sak tin is.

p.s. any sak mod sites or articles you can direct me to? I've seen some of the mods made and would like to know how to get my hands on some of em as well and maybe with time start moding a bit my self.

Thx V.

Welcome to the forums! There's been discussion in years  past elsewhere about that very thing. Victorinox springs seem to to hold up extremely well to prolonged fanning, while Wenger's seemed to weaken.I'm talking about about the pre-Victorinox take -over Wengers. How well new production Wengers are, somebody else will have to speak on that. How long  a time you keep them fanned I couldn't honestly say.

Welcome aboard. I was told a long time ago that fanning a SAK is not a good idea , I try and avoid buying display models for this reason. As to duration , I have no idea about how long for damage to occur.

I was told that as long as a spring is not over stressed, any stationary position does not wear down a spring, only motion will. I don't know how true is it but I tend to believe it. I mean look at car suspention springs, you got 3500 lbs sitting on four finger thick springs and they last at least ten years no problem.

Welcome aboard mate :)

You can fan the blades on a Vic for quite a period of time in perfect safety, and the new Wengers seem similarly robust, however the older (pre Vic takeover) ones can't as the backsprings aren't as strong in the first place :-\

As for mod's well Scibeer has he's own website, but I can't find it atm, but there's always the mod squad forum here for you to post any questions :)

For the followup - is there greater issue with having two tools on a spring fanned, as this puts further strain/tension on the spring...

Welcome aboard.  As to the springs, I have heard much the same as the rest of the chaps here.  The obvious advice would be to have a play with the tools if at all possible before you buy.  If they still feel snappy and good then there is no reason not to get it.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

I've heard of this, too, and IMO it makes sense. I hate buying display items unless there is a steeep discount.

Hello, good evening (well it is here) and welcome :D

I wouldn't worry about buying a display model unless you think its been sat there for the last decade or two :)  You'd know as soon as you tried it out if there was a problem.

Neil

I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Welcome to the forums :salute:

Most folks carry a smaller SAK for years before getting a Swisstool...you did the opposite!  How is it holding up after all these years?

The Swiss Tool is still in very good condition. Wish I could say it's still like new but it has seen some hard use and is showing some wear but the springs and the tools are in good shape and the knives are sharp.
It goes with me one all of my camping trips (along with oht + vic soldier or some other sak + my classic on the key chain).
It came in very handy on one particular day when I was helping my friend move. He was replacing the lock on the inside door of the house but the hole was a bit too small for the new lock. Out came the ST saw and a few minutes later with the help of the phillips driver the door had a new lock.

My sak collection is ever expanding. I need to post a few pics, nothing too special just your usual sakholism.

p.s. Thank you all for the warm welcome.

That would be a soccer/football cleat wrench. Check out SAKWicki.com for this Wenger Football Sports theme knife with photos and description. :tu:

Yep that wenger is a soccer/football knife, the cleat tool is for use on the studs of the shoe
I have two used vic gaks (old 108mm) coming in from sportsman's guide bit they said not to expect them shipping any time soon, the still have a deal 2 for 20 but none in stock.
