I was going to include a "It depends on how they are cooked" option but I was worried that dog-lovers may take offense to that

As regards pets of friends and family, I find dogs easier to tolerate than cats, but I wouldn't want either as pets of my own.

I like both.

I've had 5 cats in total if you include ones I fostered for quite a while. 3 cats of my own. 1 as a kid so really a family one, and a pair of male cats about 20 years ago. One got poisoned by someone and one went feral after getting locked in a neighbours garage for 4 days while he was away for a long weekend  :facepalm:

I've had 3 dogs. A family dog as a kid, and 2 of my own. Millie who I lost last August  :cry: and Milo who is outside barking at the birds as I type this  :D

I have a vested interest in both. I have three cats though. I'm also allergic to cats.
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

Between the two I will choose cats. They are the highligt of evolution (together with convergent marsupials) and the top predator everywhere, second only to the 3rd chimbanzee. Killing machines, and free spirits. I only had a Pekinois but I have played with dozens of cats I never owned. I love dogs too, but I respect cats.

I love and appreciate all animals, except the evolved subhumans that wander around doing stupid, inconsiderate things like stepping out into the road without looking then blame the driver who's reaction time is the only reason they aren't street pizza.

But getting back to the good types, all animals fill a niche and I appreciate and respect them all for what they can do.  But, when I choose an animal that I want to share my time and home with, I will always choose dogs over cats, and only partially because I am allergic to cats. 

I do have a cat at the moment (Megan's cat) and, while I do enjoy the experience of having a cat, I have to say that I wonder how the heck these animals have survived any length of time.  Going against what Konstantinos said above (which I largely agree with) I have to say that cats are among some of the most idiotic animals I have encountered.  This one is constantly doing things to endanger her own life and well being because of instinct.  For example, my Daisy is old and cranky and will grumble to warn the cat to stay away.  The cat will simply continue to wander wherever she wants, despite having been snapped at after ignoring grumbly warnings in the past- ie, the cat either a) is incapable of learning, b) forgets what she has learned or c) just doesn't care because her well being is not important to her.

Further, she likes to sit off to one side until she sees me walking somewhere, then, at the last second, jumps out in front of me and tries to trip me.  While this may be a fun game, one of these days I am going to fall on her, and 200 pounds of Grant landing on her or kicking her (accidentally of course  :angel:) is not going to go over well.

I'll stick with dogs, thank you.

I like both, but prefer owning cats.  Dogs are higher maintenance and require more time/effort/training than I have, care, to put into them.  We're actually getting a 2nd cat tomorrow.

Dogs every time. However, I do have a cat that is worth his salt and wouldn't trade him for anything.
The fact that he goes on walks and goes camping with me is just a few good reasons to keep him. Also he is very low maintenance. Spends most of his time outside keeping mice and rats away for the barns and shop. Doesn't mess with birds or tries to trip you up. He actually like having his belly rubbed and like to ride in a vehicle. I think he is a dog trapped in a cat's body. LOL! I don't hate cats, I just aways liked dogs more. Sadly I don't have a dog anymore as he passed away. But I figure one will show up some day.
