Victorinox Compact with Small Blade?
on: July 06, 2017, 04:14:46 PM
Which Victorinox most closely represents all the tools/features of the Compact, with the additional of a small blade?  I don't want to lose the Plus Scales feature.

Climber ... but you'd need to swap the scales to plus ones

Thanks.  Are Plus Scales easily purchased as a standalone item?

Yup - MTO store does them reasonably, or ebay as well. Check whether the pen is supplied with them or you'll have to buy that seperately too.

Thank.  Looks like I lose the file if going to the Climber.

Climber - Similar features, one layer thicker. Combo tool is replaced by small blade, and separate openers; adds reamer. No plus features or nail file on the hook.

If there are 91mm plus scales in the MTO store I haven't seen them.
White 84mm, yes. 91mm no.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

He's right, you know? Tried to get some from the portuguese representative and they told me as much. Also that stay-glow scales are no longer produced and can't even be ordered from Victorinox (from left over stocks or the like).

They also told me the same about nylon scales when i asked them for some, but they said i could give them a Sak i wanted to put some on and they could send to the Vic factory to put some nylon's on it for a small fee. Better than nothing  :D

However i never really bothered to ask about other Cellidor scales colors availability or plus ones as i always buy red
I have a Super Tinker that went to Vic for repairs i have to pick up, i'll ask them next time i go there

I was able to get a Climber Plus from a major seller on eBay.  He said it's now called the Climber Pen model.

I should have it in a few days.  I also ordered a Compact from Amazon.  I figure the only way to really decide is to hold them both.

Really,  you're only losing the awl functionality by going to the Compact. Right?

The Compact/Climber Plus .. both a force to be reckoned with.. I was just comment on this in the Compact Appreciated thread.

You lose the awl and secondary small blade.  I'm one of those in the minority that prefer having the 2nd smaller blade on my SAK.

Also forgot to mention golfers before 1980 or so will have a small blade. I've seen a few from the 60s with the bail. Small blade. Large blade. Scissors. And corkscrew.

Maybe a little rare and expensive, but it would be cool. I'll bet you could score one for less than the price of a new compact if you really tried.😎👍

No...the pre-1990 Golfers have both the Awl and Corkscrew as backside tools. The Compact (post-1990) lose the Awl and get the Hook (worthless in my opinion).

There is a reason the "never used an awl" club was founded... Awls are not so useful to lots of people.
(Never mind the fact that that thread degenerated into a bunch of awlful puns.  )

The inline awl is awesome in my opinion, light years better than the back side awl, and almost as desirable as the hook. :dd: :dd:
But thats just crazy me.
The only reason my bladeless woodsman has no hook is because Mags sent me a too old explorer.  :twak: :twak: (Joking.  ;) )
I would have included the hook if I had happened to get a more recent explorer(but not too recent... The grey mag is :dd: , like Mags. But I digress )

Oh, and keep in mind that my bladeless woodsman has no awl either... Its supposed to be bladeless.  :)
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

 I take it back...I forgot that I modded two Compacts a few years back, replacing the CS w/Phillips and Hook w/Awl...talk about a brain-fart.  As I looked through my other original 91mmGolfers, none of them have hooks or awls.
