Tomy i-SOBOT.
on: July 12, 2017, 01:32:11 PM
As some of you may know, I am involved in robotics at the high school level. Back in 2009, I came across this amazing little robot from Tomy called the i-SOBOT. I bought a pair of them at the time. Little did I know that they were in the process of being discontinued. I bring them out most years to amaze the new recruits about the capabilities of robots. I believe these also made the Guinness book of records as being the smallest humanoid robots at 6.5" tall. Not sue if it still holds the record...I doubt it.

These i-SOBOTs have several modes. There is a programming mode which allows you to string a series of actions together. There is a voice activated mode where it will recognize a set of commands. There is also a direct mode where you can move the robot via a remote control, and type in commands and watch it do its thing. Quite amazing to see them in action. More so when you have a pair of them following directions in unison.

Here is an online review video of one in action (not mine)...

Very cool!

What kind of power source does it use?  I am impressed by it's range of movement.  I can't imagine they were cheap, and I am scared to look on eBay and see what they are going for now.   :ahhh

That's excellent- I had assumed that it would have taken some form of proprietary battery that would be impossible to find a year or two after the unit was discontinued, and it would eventually just become an outmoded piece of expensive plastic.  I am glad to hear that the bot will live on for many years to come!  :tu:
