New scales
on: July 11, 2017, 07:02:56 PM
Here is my first , second attempt at making my own wood scales, we don't talk about my first attempt  ::) lets just say there was epoxy everywhere, drill holes showing through the scale after sanding, not lined up at all, poor little Walker, i threw it aside for now and started on a Hiker.
This went slightly better but  still struggled lining the holes up so its a bit of a mess underneath, but what you cant see cant hurt you.
So here is it in all its Mahogany goodness.

Finished in oil and beeswax, i must say Mahogany is a lot easier to work with than the Laburnum i used for the Walker, probably healthier too..
Now if i can neatly squeeze in a metal inlay for the Swiss cross logo i will be delighted  :tu:

Maybe you could use one of those hot metal 'pens' that burn the wood whose name I don't quite recall to engrave the cross

No, it's quite different, it's made to use on wood... I think it was something like pyrographer, something like that

A soldering iron might work but, it's just too messy for such fine work

Pyrography pen yes, i have one and will use it on my Walker but for this Hiker i wanted a metal shield, i did try routing out a channel and filling it with solder but it didnt work, think next will try metal epoxy.
Mechanickal - nice, what wood is it? looks like some kind of burr

I think someone here glued the crossed directly on to the scale and then built up layers of varnish until the cross was flush.

My friend made this scale for me... I think he applied a little amount of glue and used a hydraulic press to apply pressure...

This. Buy a hydraulic press. Even if you only use the press once, you can always crush stuff for fun.

Serious now, maybe carving a slot for the cross on the scale, maybe using the pyrography pen, or one of those automated carving things, put the cross in and cover with varnish?

Hi jaya_man, by scroll work i meant the use of a scroll saw but i see from another thread it was taken from a cellidor scale and pressed on, excellent idea and probably the best way to do it  :tu:
BLEAKRYTE, i dont have a small router, access to a CNC machine or 3D printer, im thinking the best way to do it is to cut out the shield and inlay it, i will leave the red inside, i didnt really want to destroy a new scale but when needs must  :tu:

I've never quite understood why people want to put the cross on the scales they made themselves.

If Victorinox make the scales, they get to put their logo on it. If I make the scales, they don't.

Each to their own but i just feel it finishes the knife, if i made the knife i would put my own logo on, Victorinox made the knife, i just made the scales, so its only right i put their logo on . What i mean is if you have a Beretta gun and make a new stock for it, its still a Beretta  :tu:

Fair play. I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, just that you shouldn't feel you have to.
If that's what you want to do though, I wish you every success with it
