A pair of interesting multi-tools...Comparison.
on: July 12, 2017, 09:54:24 AM
Here are a pair of unique multi-tools that share a common characteristic. That characteristic is all about the sliding mechanism.

Benchmark Pocket Multi-tool.

Benchmark, for those of you who may not know this, is the store label for a chain of hardware stores called Home Hardware. This interesting little multi-tools is something unique that I haven't seen before prior to seeing it in a sales flyer.

Unlike most folders out there, this little guy forms a pencil long bar. When deploying the tool, you simply pull apart the two ends and fold along the plier pivot point.

A side effect of this interesting design results in a very small pair of pliers, as they have to be reduced in size to nestle inside the handles. Furthermore, you do get a limited set of tools. You can tell it is Canadian with the inclusion of a Robertson. Included with that Robertson is a Phillips driver, a bottle opener, a very short knife blade, and a file.

Perfect Solutions Pliers Multi-tool.

Keeping with the theme of sliding mechanisms on multi-tools, here is a different take on the idea. The Perfect Solutions Pliers Multi-tool features individual locking sliding mechanisms for each folding tool. The locking mechanism is rather ingenious. Each tool has a pivot button marked red for locked, and green for open. To deploy a tool, simply move the pivot button to the green, and slide in or out the tool. These pivot buttons are spring loaded. Although each tool locks, you only get a very limited count of 4. Furthermore, the tools slide straight out of the handles.

Comparison.

Both tools closed.

Both tools opened. Note the larger plyers head on the Perfect Solutions multi-tool. Also note that the Benchmark offers a pocket clip.

Both offer a different take in incorporating a sliding mechanism.

The PerfectSolutions one seems odd. The slide-out implements should be facing the other way...

The plier on the Perfect Solutions one is either very narrow, or with very small angles for the wire cutter edges?

Good call! I wonder if they could be flipped around...

These dont look as bad as some of the other cheap tools I've seen.
