Maratac Phillips Screw Key
on: July 12, 2017, 08:32:52 PM
About a year and a half ago I gave up EDCing a SAK with the inline phillips driver and went with carrying a Maratac Screw Key on my keychain.

The size of the driver is pretty much perfect. While it won't handle the really small screws like on a laptop, it will handle just about everything else. So paired with a Rambler or Manager the phillips spectrum is covered. The one possible issue with the Screw Key is that it is hard to generate much torque using just your fingers but to be honest that hasn't been a problem for me yet.

Yesterday I tightened up the handle on the door to the laundry room in the basement of my building. As I was getting my laundry I considered the torque issue. The basement of my 100 year old building is pretty rough and unrenovated and as I was walking back to the elevator I noticed this:

This may well have been installed before I was born. The phillips screws are big and rusty. So out of curiosity I tried the Screw Key on them. It fit well but not a chance would they budge using just my fingers. But also on my keychain is a LM Squirt with pliers. So I took the Screw Key and the Squirt off the keychain and tried to turn them using the Squirt at a 90 degree angle gripping the top of the Screw Key. Surprisingly I was able to crack all four. Not too shabby for two small keychain tools :tu:

Those are quite useful indeed especially as a compliment to a corkscrew sak. I've got a phillips key on my keys too.  :tu:

I just got this little torque enhancer from CountyComm to go with the screw key. Seems pretty sturdy for plastic. Also seems to work well with the LM bit extender.

I have one of these. Didn't find it in the True Utility site. Maybe it's discontinued...

You can use a coin or any other piece of metal to add torque.

I have a couple of those. They work quite well

The True Utility one looks nice but once you get into bit drivers they are often too wide to fit recessed screws. Since most of the screws I encounter are phillips and a fair amount of them being at least slightly recessed, I prefer this one.

Yup, the TU Mini Driver isn't that great when the screws are recessed

Thx.  I already have that.  I was referring to the plastic thing.

It's another CountyComm item:

https://countycomm.com/products/edc-key-screwdriver?variant=29222289286

You can just buy the thumb cap or the whole key screwdriver.

I'm always finding something to buy on that website

Thx.  I used to, but really hate their cost for shipping.
