I picked up a Multiplier Pro Scout a while ago, and swapped the standard long nose head for BO blunt nose. I fully intended to work on the rest of the toolset too, but that was one of those jobs that falls by the wayside and never gets done ....

.... until today ....

The first thing to ditch was the lanyard loop. This meant I had the full compliment of flat drivers, plus the Phillips which is compatible with both the Gerber and Leatherman bit adaptors

Next to go was the can opener. The one from the Strata is far superior, and as I had just slaughtered my BG Strata for mod fodder, I wanted to make sure this got kept. I seriously believe it's one of the best can openers on a pliers tool ever.

The other long tool on that handle is the excellent Fiskars scissors.

The main reason that I had just slaughtered my BG Strata was the saw. I have used the saw on the Strata before, and know it to be a decent performer. As the MP600 line doesn't have a saw blade (aside from the jigsaw blade holder), the Strata saw was the ideal candidate for taking up the vacant long slot after ditching the combo edged knife blade.

Being an older Pro Scout that I was modding, the mating long tool for this handle is the Simonds USA diamond file. I also kept the excellent (and rarely found) awl with sewing eye.

Once the knife had been swapped for the saw, it all went a bit squiffy. The saw blade from the Strata is thinner than the standard knife blade, and even with the pivot screws nipped up fully, the tools had horrendous side play, enough to stop the pliers retracting.

I had to disassemble it again, and find something to take up the slack. There wasn't enough room for another standard tool, so it would have to just be washers.... unless....

Tweezers!

Everything now operates smoothly, and I can upgrade this tool for more frequent carry due to the knifeless construction. I've kept the original long nosed pliers to one side, in case the blunts become a hinderance now I've left the engineering scene.

I think this has got just about the perfect toolset for a knifeless MP600 (for me), yet still not heavy or bulky, and with damn good ergonomics. The only thing I might need to do, is grind down the spine of the saw and opposing can opener tool, as it's just starting to get a little pinchy there.

Aside from that, this is a mod I'm extremely happy with  :salute:

That is a smashing mod Al  :salute:

Do you have any suggestions o=for a saw in the '400 - I have the file, but due to space restrictions is a saw possible as well?

You can have two long tools in the 400. I'm not sure how yours is set up, but mine has file and scissors - the 600 has four long tool slots (saw, file, scissors, and extended dual opener in this one), but also the long tool slot is longer on the 600 with it being a larger framed tool. The Strata saw that I have used on this mod would be too long to fit a 400 frame.

As regards sources for the saw, there's the one from the Strata that I used, the one from the Diesel, or with a bit of jiggery pokery and clever use of abrasives, you can modify a SOG one like SteveC did. Zoidie might have done it too  However, the Strata and Diesel ones are essentially drop in, which makes like a lot easier  ;) That's based on going in a 600 frame though. If you are specifically looking at fitting the 400 frame, you might be limited to the SOG modification unless you start shortening the others. The only other possibility that I can think of (and haven't checked compatibility) is a Suspension (or one of the many clones which shared the tool set)

:salute: Thanks Al - I'll look into it.

I have the file and scissors taking up the long sides. Definitely don't want to lose the scissors!

I may try the blade exchanger with shortened blades - then I can swap from metal saw to wood saw. Or just carry a SAK with a saw  :D It's the MTO way!

Thanks guys. It's already proved useful in dealing with the bacterial canker on my cherry tree. It's nice to have a heavier duty knifeless tool in my array too

Cheers buddy

They are actually the tweezers from a MP700, and were the perfect width to take up the additional slack from the saw being thinner than the knife

I didn't realize the MP700 came with tweezers

Also (mostly to be pedantic), It looks like you started with a Scout, not a Pro Scout, based on the awl & simmonds file.

That is a seriously great tool load out. I've always loved how complete your mods are, and look forward to seeing more

Quite possibly. I've never really been any good at keeping up with variations and evolution over the different generations of SAKs or pliers tools. Thanks for the ego boost, but I think I've now got all I'll ever need for the tool mods now. This MP600, MP600 with shears, MP400, Diesel, Octane and Fuse. Although I never did finish the Wave mod

It's been a costly journey but worth it.  :D
