Many Awlsome Tasks...
on: July 20, 2017, 09:13:15 AM
Say... is there an Awl Merit Badge?  :D

Today, decided was time to check the shoe cleats for tightness since been using them for nearly 200 miles now. Used a bit from the Mako Ti and inserted that into the LM Crunch. One shoe's torque bolt was loose, got it tightened up, but the second one was filled with crushed rock. Pliers weren't cutting it. Grabbed an awl and dug those tiny crushed rock pieces that were jammed in there from walking, then got it tightened up. So the clipless shoe cleats are ready to go.
Oh, had to remove a small rock embedded in other shoe - awl worked that out too.

Awls are good for cleaning dirt from under fingernails after a long day's ride too.  :D

Okay, made a Flikr account and now to get used to their format.  :twak:  Seems Google is being finicky on what they will or will not share, despite having sharing options selected. /rude PB

Then post some photos using an awl or what's it has accomplished, y'awl. :pok:

Pulled an awl out of a Rebar back in 2015 and slide it in place of the scissors on the CTTi ... although mangled the spacer /smurfit

And it's then new home.  :D

Ok, yawl.

I've been really into my Wenger Evo S13 and was curious to see how well the awl would work against the back layer awl on a Victorinox. So I found this wood composite board with wood veneer surface in the recycling area of my building. I was going to try to do a slightly formal test marking the hole with the time it took to drill it and the awl that was used but it degenerated into me just smurfing around with awls and saws. What I do remember from this is that the back layer awl on a 91mm Vic was definitely the fastest, next was 93mm Vic inline awl, tied for 3rd place was a LM Juice awl that I had reshaped and the can opener on the Wenger (was surprised by that), and in last place was the back layer Wenger awl. I've been considering sharpening this awl to perform better at drilling tasks and wanted to get a better sense of how profile effects performance.

Let's see, over the years/decades I've used awls to...

 • Sew, stitch, repair things - different type of awl, yet is an awl
 • Repair, sew, and fabricate (with) tarp
 • Temporarily repaired oilskin
 • Fashion leggings with awl w/ thread-loop during a bad winter storm. More of an under-garment to keep the knees & lower legs warm
 • Repaired fire fighting boots during lunch bread, which saved me from getting booted from the job
 • Drilled holes in stuff
 • Cleaned tubing and hoses out with for vehicle repairs
 • Cut off thick rubber foot rests off motorcycle to replace with a newer set
 • Cut off and removed glued on MTB grips
 • Cut reinforced hoses with cause didn't want to get the main blade all funky smellin'
 • Cleaned out fingernails, toenails, and removed a few ingrown toenails
 • Pierced an ear, well, re-pierced an ear. Don't bet against a guy with a sharp awl.  >:D
 • Poked holes in stuff
 • Cooked with over an open fire
 • Fabricated thick plastics for various projects using an awl
 • Stabbed things with an awl
 • Used awl for a throwing knife - if the blade missed maybe the awl would get it!
 • Defensive weapon, SAK awls, center out the fingers
 • Widened holes
 • Added extra holes in the belt
 • Stabbed into siding to hang a coat & other things from - dunny survival technique
 • Made 3D petroglyphs with
 • Wood carving
 • Used with electronic components
 • Dismantling stuff with

Probably did a few other thing with an awl that probably should not be mentioned.  :D
