Leather or non leather?

I was going to make a poll but I'm not really familiar with every sheath type.  I understand that every sheath has their place so this is more of a whats your preference and why?

Leather. Just like in jackets. Love the texture, smell, how it gains a smoother look over time.

Also, I can make leather sheaths. Not so much in kydex, nylon, wood...

Leather first. Just something about tanned dead cow carcass. Love the natural colors, grain, the way it holds up over time and the way it slowly wears.

I am also a big fan of leather.  The way it creeks and feels.  The smell and way it ages.  Even the scariest belt knife looks classy in a leather sheath IMO.  I have a few Kydex belt knife sheaths and while they hold the knife amazingly there is just something wonderful about leather.  I've yet to get a leather/kydex combo sheath.  Best of both worlds?

Love the leather SAK sheaths I've seen here on MTO.  I have one that is wonderful.  It fits up to my Champion really nicely.  I feel classy wearing it and thats saying a lot

Both are great, but leather is my personal choice.

I'm a sucker for nice leatherwork.
Don't know why, but if it's a wallet, a bag, a coat, a sheath or even a keychain.
If it's nicely done, I love it.
There's something about it; like others mentioned allready. The touch, the texture, but also the way it shows it's life by colour differences. Both used and new. The way it ages, the fact that it's all natural, etc etc etc.

For humid and/or saly environments though, Nylon all the way!

Leaving your knives in leather for extensive amounts of time can cause pitting, no?

I only have one sheath and it's nylon.  I think I want a canvas sheath.

Yes it could. But putting a carbon steel blade and some other type of steel put away wet in kydex can cause pitting also. Personally,  leather can not be to bad if they have been using it for thousands of years. And I bet the blades suffered more from use than from leather. Just my opinion though. Also, I have never seen any bad effects from leather myself. But I have seen pics where it has. But I tend to think there are other factors going on.

Good point.  But then again there weren't that many nylon artisans back in the day. I had one of the old leather Zermatt Vic sheaths as a kid for my first Tinker.  They're pretty cool.

I've heard this too.  I have had a Carbon steel knife Anza in its original sheath for years.  If you are going to store anything tho why not treat it?

I have used frogs lube on knives that sit. I have had no issues with anything.  I'd imagine there are lots of factors involved.

I would rather not use leather.... probably something to do with being vegetarian.
However, it is natural and the alternatives are unnatural.

Honest question.  What if the animal died naturally?  Would using the leather be ok?

I ask because I had worked with a neat lady who was vegetarian and had some hard lines about what she would and wouldn't do.  I really enjoyed working with her and listening to her thoughts.  She was such a kind soul.  I wondered about for years after working with her for over a year.  I love all the differences we bring to the table.

I find it hard to avoid leather completely eg: I play cricket which uses a leather ball. I just do what I can.

Leather looks (very) nice and wears well, but as all materials, it isn't the best choice for everything. Nothing wrong with choosing what is best for the given situation.

Get both.

As for leather being natural, modern agriculture uses quite a lot of oil. “Three quarters of a gallon of oil to produce a pound of beef,” is not the entire truth, but it's still worth remembering. This obviously changes at least a little if your leather originates from game, I guess. I'm from  of a tree hugger point of view, so I like to point out the fact that consumption of pretty much anything is potentially problematic. Owning a big dog? I've been told it's about the same carbon footprint as a SUV(!), since the dog eats a lot, the food has to be produced (see the previous part on oil in agriculture...), and so on. I have drifted quite a lot from topic, but I defend myself by saying it's all connected. “It's... complicated,” is the best summary of pretty much anything. :D

I don't approve of killing animals to make trophies or use just a part of it and throw away the rest.

One thing I always thought about using cow hide. Since cows are getting raised and killed to be eaten, shouldn't we at least use everything we can from the animal? Like leather, horns, bones...

In the case of cattle, we could also argue that we should not eat them in the first place, too.

I do prefer leather for looks and durability, but ....

a) I rarely use ANY kind of belt sheath
b) When I do wear a sheath knife, I like to be able to use it for food use, and leather can't be sanitised like plastics can
c) Leather can attack carbon steel blades due to the tannins, and can also hold moisture.

.... but I do still prefer leather sheaths when the circumstances are appropriate ... even if it is very rare that I'll actually use them

Kydex is nice too. I have seen some sheaths that use leather and kydex. They look pretty cool.

One of my favourite knives comes with a leather belt sheath and a kydex neck sheath. I don't have any of the combo sheaths but I do like the idea  :salute:
