Your thoughts/ideas please
on: August 02, 2017, 04:29:08 PM
I've been modding a Wave on and off for a couple of years now. Tweaking a bit, then chucking it back in the projects box for a couple of months, then rinse and repeat  ::) I have replaced the drivers with "proper" ones, and have wanted to make it knifeless for quite a while, but couldn't decide what to actually replace the knife blades with .... then last week I had an idea....

I knew the Wingman scissors was one option, and they have been sat waiting to have the pivot hole opened up in the project box, but what to replace the other with? Pry tool! The perfect solution was living on my Grappler! I dismantled the Grappler, and as expected I was not a drop in fit, but I was a "metal on" situation. It could be modified.

This morning, I opened up the pivot hole in the Wingman scissors, and I the bore of the pry tool, and reshaped the tang of the pry tool. (power tools + balance disorder = exciting! :ahhh) The pry tool now fits and liner lock engages fully, as in right across the full thickness, but obviously can't go past because of the thick retaining plate/washer.

The complication, is that I have had to use a saw/file slot. If I then move the saw/file to a knife slot, the taper on the tang for the liner lock to sit against is upside down, and therefore won't engage.

Do I....

A) Modify the tang on the saw?
B) Modify the tang on the file?
C) Attempt to reverse the OHO ramp on the pry tool so I will go in a knife slot? (possibly the highest risk option for a smurf up)

If you change any of the ramps, would the tools lock after removing metal? I my mind they would be a little loose.

I modified the tang on the saw when I did mine:

Didn't take much off at all in order to make it lock.

I think there was some, but I decided it wasn't an issue.  The lock wasn't coming undone, and a bit of play in the saw didn't affect how it worked.

Did similar when I was adding OHO scissors to a Charge. Did it to the file. No problems, just take a little bit and test each time.

No, I think the action was smooth enough that I was able to OHO it using my thumb.

Ah, yes - when you swap the saw over to the other side, the detent nub on the lock tab doesn't have anything to engage with, so it's easier to open the saw.

Aw crap!

I just noticed that I'll have to do the saw AND file, as the scissors have to go in one of their slots too  ::)

Why Two pairs of scissors or are you going to switch out the smaller ones for something ?

Yeah, the internals were done before I had figured out what I was going to do with the external configuration.

The external scissors aren't behaving at the moment in terms of correctly locking open and tensioning the spring. Once I've got that fixed, I'll be completely reprofiling the scissor blades to make them more usable. The design of the Wingman scissors are abysmal, and I'll be moving the cutting edges more inline with the pivot, similar to what Zoidie has done on his, and possibly refining the pivot and crinking them a little better. Until the edges are where they should be so that they cut instead of just pushing material away, I won't know what other refinements are needed.

Once all the externals have been finished, I'll be looking at replacing the internal scissors. I don't know what with yet, as it all depends what I've got in the parts tub. I may end up repurposing the package opener from the Wingman, or maybe looking at making an awl out of something.

Sounds like a plan Al .   I'd go for an awl myself.     :like:

Well all the externals are in position, and all open and close. I've done a little reprofiling on the scissors, but they still need fine tuning. They do now look an improvement over the originals.

An awl may well be the logical choice, Steve. Looks like I've gut fewer LM parts in the tub than I thought.  :-\ There's what looks like a BO Rebar driver in there, so that's a potential candidate.

If you change any of the ramps, would the tools lock after removing metal? I my mind they would be a little loose.

That was my fear too before Chris mentioned his. The saw locks up quite solidly, and there's just a tiny wiggle on the file, but nothing detrimental  :tu:

I did something similar to yours a few years ago on a different tool (which has since been liberated from me by someone with sticky fingers) although mine looked a little more .... agricultural  :P

Finished-ish  :P

All built back up with awl fudged out of a Rebar driver. Not the prettiest tool perhaps, but certainly functional, and with a better loadout than what comes from factory (in terms of my needs and preferences anyway). I need to carry this for a few days now I think, and see how those scissors fare with regular daily tasks.

Aside from a little fine tuning, all that's needed is a name
