They sure are.  You wont press them do the work of MT pliers or even LM Squirt pliers IMO but they are nice.  I think of them as super tweezers +.  They handle jobs where finger strength is limited.  They can also hold things when fingers should not be used.  They can be used when lighter plier jobs are needed and when reach when fingers wont due.

Here is a video of a guy using a Swiss Army knife pliers to remove a straw from a turtles nose....it's quite graphic but I really think he's doing this turtle a huge favour.

Anyway the point is they are strong enough to be useful.

Yup, the Mechanic is discontinued, I think. That said, the Deluxe Tinker is a great knife which feels very comfortable in my hand.

Good luck. I already  found mine.

I should make a combo tool family picture.

Btw, is there any combo tool badge ?

The Deluxe Tinker is a great SAK.  If you love SAK scissors, and why wouldn't you  :D the addition of the pliers is just icing on the SAK cake.

For the reasons (and example!) mentioned above, I agree that the pliers are useful. In fact, I can find almost as many if not more reasons to use the pliers throughout the day as I can the scissors (the blades can usually do what the scissors can anyway).

The other day I received diamond rods for my Sharpmaker- they came wrapped in a lightweight thin foam, with the packaging folded into the ends of the rods. I didn't want to cut or tear the foam and damage the diamond grits so I used my Swiss Champ pliers to probe inside and pull out the foam. Little things like that.

Are the scissors on the Deluxe Tinker bigger or different than other SAKS?

They're the same as any 91mm SAK with scissors...

Nope the standard 91mm SAKs scissors.  What I'd like is a Explorer with pliers.

Hmmmm ......

We're into CT34 territory there. I like the CT34, I think it's a great tool, but too large for everyday trouser pocket carry. Bag, yes - jacket, yes - trouser pocket .... pardon the pun, but I think that would get a bit wearing ....

I've actually thought about taking the pliers layer off my CT34 and adding it to the Sheepsfoot Duke. This gives me a slimmer version of a Deluxe Tinker for regular carry, and a more pocketable Cybertool with scissors (which the CT29 lacks).

I'd go for a Deluxe Tinker in 84mm.  Is that even possible with the pliers?

I have several Cybertools but none really pushed all the right buttons.  I think I'll have a look again.

just today,
my Champion's pliers saved a stuck CD on my very old (but still working!) PS2. I put small silk folds on  both plier jaws and pulled it in a straight angle. Hand would've been way messier and dangerous
and I pulled away the covers of a double sided tape that we used to install a new inalambric phone on and a repeater on two places of the house. Noone's fingernails were precise enough to grab the small, thin covering and the SAK tweezers didn't have enough purchase, they bent..

You might need to go 85mm .... or possibly a mod with the 85mm pliers

I do like the Cybertool layer, but would like a slimmer model with scissors.

SAK pliers are fine but I prefer to keep small pliers separate so I can hold a a nut with them while using the drivers on my SAK.
All three of these and especially the CrossGrip are more capable than SAK pliers:

I bought a mechanic earlier in the year. They are out there if look. I purchased mine with Stayglow scales. It t ok a bit for me to find a purpose of them. However once I did, I've really enjoyed this tool load out.
I would like to find a special mechanic one day.

I've had a Gerber Dime on my keys since they first came out, and that's got me out of a fix several times. I'm a big fan of the IDL T5 and T7 too.

The IDL tools are surprisingly robust. Their limit seems to be how much pain you can endure while cranking down on them  :D

There's a right way, and a wrong way....  :P Having the flat driver to your palm is the wrong way  :ahhh :ahhh

With the Phillips to my palm, I can grip the pliers more firmly than I would risk with many other folding pliers

That definitely helps the situation but I've still been tempted to soften the edges on both drivers but that will to some degree minimize their effectiveness and as they are both of those drivers are quite good.
Perfection is elusive :ahhh

I was going to be a wise guy and post a pic of one with only pliers layer, but I never did one.  The thinnest one I did was a 2 layer.
