Used SAK's - affordable alternative to new
on: October 22, 2008, 01:05:14 AM
As people ask questions about SAK's, like the discussion thread about what folks favorite 58mm SAK is, let's not forget about used SAK's. Used SAK's from Tim (felinevet) are an excellent way to get decent SAK's for cheaper than full retail or even Internet discounts. I have purchased several used SAK's from Tim and they were perfectly acceptable and perfectly usable. Cleaned them up real nice under hot soapy water, touch-up the blades, new toothpick, and away I went.

My favorite example is when I bought a used Mechanic from Tim, and new scales from Tom (rotokid, Tim's son). For less than half the price of new, I got a basically new Mechanic which I still use. One thing I did was get a few extra new toothpicks though. :D

So, if you're on a tight budget, think used.  :tu:

I try to avoid buying new whenever possible.  I may be struggling with an XAVT though :)

I buy all that I can used but if it's too much of a hassle, is unavailable, or I can a new one at a marginal cost...

I usually buy New unless I can get something used for next to nothing. I once got a really nice Wenger that way.

The majority of my collection was bought "used" from felinevet.  I've been amazed many time at what he considers used!!  I would call them "like new".  Honest man, that Tim....   :salute:

I think only 6 out of my 20 or so SAKs I bought new.  Only two of the scond hand ones were in a poor state.  I didn't pay much and both were pulled apart for their components.  It's always worth remembering that Vics warrenty is great and seem happy to sort you out with a new knife.
