New Gen Wave with added awl
on: August 05, 2017, 06:11:59 PM
A pair of TS10 5 star pentablobe torx bits arrived today from E-Bay.  So I modified my new gen Wave.

Although I like the scissors, I prefer those on the original gen wave, and it's a bit of a fuss to open up the Wave to use the tiny scissors.  So these went.

I don't think I am ever going to use a Wave top open up a can of baked beans, so the can opener went too.

Also, the Wave feels too large to use the delicate small bit holder bits, so this went as well.

Everyone wants to add an awl, so I did.  And I added another large bit holder (loaded with double ended PH and flat heads).  Last slot went to a chisel ground large flathead.  I may put a v-notch in the end, to make it more like a mini pry-bar.

I had to remove one of the pliers headrests, to let the awl side fit.  I tried to push the headrest down, but it broke off.   :(

The Wave closes properly.  This set of tools feels much better suited for my general use.   ;)

To my surprise, the awl is getting decent use!  In the past the type of awl I've had on (non-locking) penknives have been very wimpy so I never thought an awl was a useful tool.  But I heard so many people here saying it is what they wanted on a Wave that I put in a spare piece I had --- was a good decision!  File (great) and saw (wonderful) also get good use!

I'm not so sure about the chisel ground large driver --- not used it yet.  And I've removed one of the bit holders --- having two means I could carry two bits/four heads all the time, but if I'm at home the extra holder is not really needed (and I cannot take the Wave outside since it's not street legal in the UK).  What I missed was a better screwdriver, so I added in a Blast cross head.  This also take the adaptor for regular hex bits.

The Wave closes properly, but only becaise I removed the plier head supporting tab on the awl side.

:like:   I like that design better.  it's really easy to find a way to carry the second bit on your keys or in a sheath or something.  Having that dedicated Phillips driver will probably come in handy from time to time.

All you are missing is a bottle opener

Added VIC scissors.  Needed to open up the pivot hole (used diamond file --- I had trouble drilling out the hole, even with cobalt bits).

Needed to grind off some of the scissor tang at the top and bottom, so the top fits the Wave frame and the bottom clears the lock.  I probably took too much off the bottom part, because it does not lock.  But there's not much material there to keep it locked.  It was locking, but I ground down more so it opened more cleanly.  However, even at the half way position the lock springs out, so I need to keep the lock depressed to complete closing the scissors.

Replaced the serrated knife with the scissors.  I ground down the piece that stops the knife opening, because this was pressing on the scissors when I opened the pliers.

Internally, the original scissors and small bit holder have been removed and added an awl and Phillips.  These are all tools use I use, so I think I may have my perfect wave!   :)

Does removing the plier head rest stop have any negative effects or change the functionality In any way?

:D  Just throwing this out there...

If you swap the slotted driver with a Vic slotted driver/bottle opener, then you will be able to open your beer and mexican coke bottles without losing a function  :drink:

It looks Great!

There are instances (some closing plier techniques combined with certain inner tool placement) where the plier head can get stuck between the inner tools.

I see. I opened the tool and looked around. Looks like as is the pliers would interfere with the small bit driver and scissors if the rest was removed. Thanks for the reply

This is a Surge, same method though.

Just because it no longer has a bottle opener doesn't mean it can't open bottles.
