The fire parafernalia of a traditional Greek sepherd of the mountains.

Left to right, priovolos, stournari and yska.

Priovolos is a metal aparatus, with which they also sharpened their knives.
Stournari is a kind of flint.
Yska is derived from a fungus of the vine trees.

The way they used them:

Types of priovola

The fungus yska is made off

A more advanced use of yska, the tsakmaki (around WWI)

What's the fire risk over at the UK in summer?

It's near nil I would say here in Ireland.  ::)
Rainfall chart for Dublin, one of the drier parts:

In the driest months, 14 wet days a month.  :ahhh
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

I already have a Light My Fire Army Firesteel, and a bic lighter in my bug out gear, so I got myself something new last weekend.  I haven't tested or taken pics of it myself (yet), but here's a youtube video so you guys know what I'm talking about:

Since it only costed 9,95 Euro, I thought it was worth a try  ;).

Why do I have a feeling that similar technologies were developed or adopted from other cultures in all parts of the world because they were efficient? Also reminds me that I migt want to get a steel striker just for the fun of it

I've made something similar using the Survivorman recipe, so I want that!  :gimme:

My own version worked to a degree, you need patience and to make peace with spot blindness

It works just fine at night (since it's made to hold a mini bic Lighter  ;)).

Anyway, tested it a couple of days ago with a piece of paper in it and the paper cought fire in about 30 seconds, I'm guessing it will be faster mid summer.

That could be interesting to test in the winter when the sun isn't that strong
