Do you carry a supplemental Sak along with another knife?

If anyone is still interested in what to carry with a SAK, one of the best combos I ever carried was a Victorinox Mountaineer paired with a Leatherman Sidekick.  The Mountaineer has a decent file / metal saw, and scissors, while the Sidekick has a pretty good one hand opening knife blade and a wood saw.  Not a lot of redundancy or wasted space there.

That is an interesting and efficient combo for having a lot of tools and not a lot of overlap.

I would love to carry a Sidekick (or Wingman) but alas - UK+EDC = Non starter (mostly) 

This blows me away, and kind of freaks me out. I have no basis for understanding how the knife laws over there, and other places get to be so stringent. Whats your take?

1.  Private citizens have no constitutional right to keep and bear arms.
2.  In the name of public safety, the government effectively bans private ownership of firearms.
3.  Violent criminals continue to use whatever means are readily available (frequently knives) to commit violent crimes.
4.  As a practical matter, knives can’t be completely banned, but in the name of public safety, the government tightly restricts their ownership and carry.

That is an amazing combo. For a while I was carrying a Pioneer and Ambassador and thought they were a great compliment but the Executives seem better without much more bulk. I like what you have done to your small blade, looks useful for many things.

Well, I’m not Alan but I do have one of those Myerchins, and the answer is yes, it can opened with one hand.

Yes.  Nate is correct.  The shackle key cut out on the Myerchin blades is a good thumb hole once you get used to the shape.  Here's another shot of my second generation plain edge and my first gen partially serrated with a fixed blade version.  A word of caution, however, is if you're looking for a used Myerchin rigging knife they do not extend any warranty coverage if you're not the original owner.  So, if you buy it on E-Bay, and it breaks, you'll just have to buy another one.

thanks Alan for the heads up on getting one from eBay- that's exactly what I was doing but it seems that they go for about the same price as a new one so I'll probably just get a brand new shiny one!

I'm a big fan of titanium and that knife looks so sleek and useful. definitely was looking for something that is OHO for when I'm out on the boat and with the added marlinspike it really looks like a winner.

I have the Myerchin Gen 2 Titanium Captain and the Myerchin Gen 2 Titanium Crew.

As Alan said, they can be OHO using the shackle key as a thumb hole.  Both of mine also have a flipper tab that, in conjunction with a wrist flick, can be used to OHO the blades as well.  (It looks like Alan maybe has an older version without the flipper?)

Between the Captain and the Crew, I appreciate the larger blade and longer spike of the Captain, and find its larger handle to be more comfortable in and a better fit for my hand.  It also requires less of a wrist flick due to the heavier blade.  However, the Crew is about half the weight of the Captain. 

Ultimately, if I intended to use it as my primary knife, I would prefer the Captain.  But if weight were a major concern, and or I had another primary knife for cutting and intended to use the Myerchin mostly for the spike, then I would go with the Crew.

I often go scissorless… I know, shocking, right? I like the scissors, but I find I don’t use them enough to justify carrying a thicker SAK.

If I only had a one SAK for the rest of my days I could die happily with only a Pioneer.

Great survey and much more varied and interesting responses than I expected . I thought  everyone would have a 58mm on their keychain and a 91 or 93 in their pocket!

As for me these days just an Explorer in my pocket  - I don’t usually carry keys! Otherwise there would be a 58mm.

I usually just carry my Recruit and a Classic SD.  Once in a while I will carry my Ontario Rat 2 and I will carry my Rebar when I am working in the yard or if I know I need it.

It doesn't cover awl of the areas such as "lawful authority" in any detail (which is what I have for work purposes - issued Gov't kit) However, for the average Joe (and me on my days off) it pretty much sums it up.

Here in the UK it's about blade length and type (sub 3" & non-locking  ) If it locks you may have some explaining to do (regardless of blade length)  - likewise above 3" (even if it folds) 

OHO stuff, subject to the sub' 3" & non-locking, is fine (Spyderco UK Penknife)

The above covers MTs as well so a locking saw blade could well find you having an interview sans biscuits 

Ultimately, don't be a dick with a knife. If you have to ask yourself "could I get into trouble with this?" you awlready have your answer about carrying it (notwithstanding the legality) Even a SAK Classic will get you nicked if you say the wrong thing or use it unlawfully (self defence is NOT a defence if carried purely for that purpose)

I've managed to carry a SAK or similar awlmost everywhere for my 50+ years with no issues.

Here where I live many men carry a locking blade clipped to their pocket, or even a fix blade in some of the more rural areas I go to. People are desensitized because we also see people openly carrying firearms on their belt as well. I guess inevitably restrictive laws can harm normal folks while criminals still carry on breaking laws as they see fit. They can just grab a kitchen knife and commit a knife crime despite the law.  I cringe when people do violence with a pocket knife as its truly not even one of the functions I assign to it, even in emergencies. Gives a bad name to a useful tool. Thanks for the  perspective .

  Nice selection there.

This is what I have been carrying, a 4 layer 91mm that is my work horse crafting, EDC, around the house tool. Combined with a carbon blade opinel, traditional or whatever.

I carry a 91mm SAK (Climber or Explorer) as my main EDC knife, along with an Executive and a small traditional slipjoint knife, a Schrade Old Timer.
