Fieldmaster = Super Tinker + Saw

Hi all, former cubscout, and now professional desk worker.

It's been a while since I've held up the scout sign or tied a square knot (tie more figure-eights), but the motto of being prepared has always stuck. When I first bought my Super Tinker as an adult, I was looking for something versatile that I could always have on me and maybe not draw too much attention. Figure a folding knife is a bit aggressive, whereas most people won't bat an eye at a the familiarity of the SAK. I didn't think I'd ever need a saw because you'd pack one explictly, and as a city slicker, how often do I need to saw stuff outside my apartment?

So I've taken my Super Tinker with me around the world, but last weekend I was up in the woods, and we were cutting some branches for shelter and guess what? We needed a saw. Of course, the Super Tinker doesn't have one, but one of my buddies, he's got a Leatherman. "Hey Joe, you got a saw on your Leatherman?" "..... nope."

We managed to break off branches by butchering my Condor knife and getting tree sap all over ourselves, but I learned an important lesson--you really can't use something else to replace a saw. So first thing I did when I got back to civilization was to find an upgrade. Luckily the Fieldmaster has all the tools the Super Tinker does, plus the irreplaceable saw and nothing more. I'm so happy this has all the essentials now.

Welcome to the forum knifty... The Fieldmaster/Huntsman would be an ideal all around SAK for urban and outdoor settings... It's also one of the popular SAK models... :cheers:

Great choice knifty!

I love my Fieldmaster. Anytime I'm headed into the woods, I take a SAK with a saw. The saw makes the SAK a seriously useful field tool.

Have a look at the Woodsman... It has an additional Inline Phillips/Mag Glass layer... although already discontinued, the mexican market versions can sometimes be found on ebay...

Or a modded Yeoman + WS... The farmer is a good choice too :cheers:

This is how feature creep happens! And in 6 months I'll be carrying a Superchamp. :D

I like El Corkscrew's combo idea a lot. It was something I was thinking about since I had lent my Super Tinker to someone else and it got a bunch of tree sap on it. Have a Farmer for fieldwork and don't mind that it gets mucked up, then have a Manager/Mini Champ for housework.

Welcome aboard Knifty and I agree.  The same thing happened to me last summer on a hike with my son, except substitute the Super Tinker for a Minichamp.  Luckily for us my son had his Hiker....lesson learned for old Pop!

zoidberg, unfortunately I don't remember. We were doing an event that took place at night and had to navigate to a location and build a shelter around midnight.

And if you are willing to dump the children's tool you can get even more functionality in a smaller package with this mod :D
