I want my first merit badge to be the mighty hook. So, IAW the posted rules, I'm starting up a new hook thread. I know, I know, I know, you aren't a fan of the hook. Hey, I too thought it was kind of silly on my first SAK with a hook. But, the more I used it, the more uses I found for it. Parcels? Uh....no. But string, rope, and shoe laces? Why, yes. For example, I don't own any SAK's with a marlin hook (my bad), but I've found that the hook serves nicely in splicing lines. I'm not a great splicer, but I do enjoy splicing lines for kayaks, canoes, and my wife's laundry rack. Don't ask.(Image removed from quote.)(Image removed from quote.)Definitely beats needle nose pliers (my previous splicing aid). Maybe more commonly, I find the hook to be useful for tying knots with small lines and cordage. The triple Fisherman's (Grapevine) is one such knot. A single or double fisherman's knot is prone to failure, especially with slick, modern materials. The triple or quad fisherman's knot solves that, but is a bit trickier to tie. In comes the SAK hook:(Image removed from quote.)(Image removed from quote.)So the next time you are working with lines or cords, maybe tying up a parcel, I encourage you to try using the hook as an aid; you might be surprised.
Very interesting Nix, and creative. I can almost see a use for that damned hook! Good luck on the Merit Badge

Barry, can your wife crochet? Bet she could use that hook to whip up an afghan.I was thinking about trying to make a fishing net with the hook. How hard can it be....?

Since I'm generally not a hook officiando, that's a step forward for me (don't tell Pablo because I'll never hear the end of it).
Funny you should mention that Nix! She was just saying it looks exactly like a small crochet hook! Quote from: Nix on August 12, 2017, 03:49:27 AMBarry, can your wife crochet?
