Pioneer X, 30 day challenge
on: August 13, 2017, 04:33:14 AM
So here goes, Day 1. A Pioneer X  30 day challenge.

So right up front, all hubris exposed, this challenge doesn't seem like a big deal. It seems easy. The Pioneer X might be my favorite SAK after the Soldier or Pioneer. Or Compact. And I really like the Cadet. But still, how hard can it be to post-up daily on a fantastic knife like the Pioneer X?

We'll see.

I've decided to up the ante a bit. My challenge to myself is to carry one Pioneer X (I have two) for 30 days, every day. I'll supplement the Pioneer X with a Rambler or Classic SD and a sheath knife (as needed). So, one knife, everyday, with a post every day, for 30 days. Seems like a nice way to get to know a knife, one particular knife, well.

So here goes.....

To make this challenge a bit easier (or harder), I'm going to make a simple belt sheath for the Pioneer  (can we just call this the PX?). This will enable me to carry and use the knife more easily (I think).

To make this part more interesting, I'm going to try to sew the sheath up with a SAK awl. Not the reamer on the PX, but a standard Spartan/Tinker awl. 'Cuz awls rock.

No guarantees here, though. I'm no leather worker. Still, it's worth a try, right?

Keep in mind though that official challenge months often require you to ditch all other tools during the challenge.
Posting new pics every day can have it's difficulties.
Looking forward to the PX pics mate.

That first template didn't seem like it would work. The PX is a bit thick, so a second template seemed necessary.

More to follow.....that'd be Day 2!

Oh dear!  :o

Please clarify. The Pioneer X challenge description doesn't seem to indicate that a secondary tool (Classic SD in this case) is prohibited. I do plan to carry the Pioneer X every day (x30).

In several of the original challenges that was the point ;) One tool for 30 days and that was all you had :ahhh :D Take a pic and also get to really know the knife :tu:

Good luck either way with the challenge :like:

OK...one (1) knife, the Pioneer X (PX).

Seems a bit rough living without a Classic SD; I mean, I'm not a savage, but I guess that's what makes it a challenge.  :-\

This may be harder than I thought......

This is just a standard badge challenge so you can carry other gear with the challenge item.
The idea is to always try with the challenge item first and to let us know if it didn't work and you had to use other gears.

Exceptions to any challenge are work requirements and safety, do what you need to do while looking after yourself and others at all times.

Good luck Nix.

I found the PX to be an excellent stand alone after carrying one for many months. I did carry a toothpick in my wallet, but didn't have to go hunting down other pocket tools very often, unless I needed the Spirit for something or other, but for pocket carry it's great. Also the +B model without the keyring is a good idea, when I got mine that wasn't a factory option, so ended up filing it off for less fiddly pocket carry.  :salute:

I did the PX challenge for the first badge. It was quite a good challenge and it showed just how capable  this tool is.

Day 01.

Thanks for the encouragement guys.

Trying to be true to the spirit of the 30-day challenge, I'm resetting the clock to make this Day 01. Yesterday, I carried the knife for only part of the day and it was accompanied by a Classic SD (Love the Classic!). I didn't fully understand the nature of the challenge until a few people chimed in and sorted me out.

So, I'm restarting the challenge today with my chivalry intact and only the Pioneer X in my pocket.

Already this morning I've used the Pioneer X (PX, in this thread) to trim a few stray whiskers from my beard and mustache--one of the reasons I like having a SAK with scissors in my pocket.

I had planned to take the PX for a long ramble today, but overnight we had a lot of smoke from wildfires in Canada, the Pacific Northwest, and places in Montana roll in, and so the air in Big Sky Country is too hazy and unhealthy for outdoor pursuits. So I'll be staying indoors today.

I've decided to shelve the idea to make a sheath until after the challenge is over. I don't think I could do a very neat job with the reamer/awl on the PX. The Sewing awl on other models is far more suited to that task.

So, please join along as I proceed on this challenge; I'll be glad for the encouragement and company!  :salute:

Seems only right to start the challenge with a sharp knife, so a few minutes with stone and strop to start the day. Isn't that what Sundays are made for?

Only one tool for one month? That's a real challenge! I might do the same one of these months.

Best of luck, Nix!

I'd still like to see u make a sheath. Maybe the powers that be will allow the use of a different tool solely for the use of making the sheath?

DAY 02

"I'd still like to see u make a sheath. Maybe the powers that be will allow the use of a different tool solely for the use of making the sheath?"

Thanks for the support. I get the sense from the Powers that my making a sheath would not cause them to melt down or ban me from the forums. But, still, I want to stay true to the spirit of the challenge, so the sheath project will be put on hold for a while. Don't worry, though, it will happen (and feel free to remind me if my attention gets lost). And I'll post step-by-step photos and an narrative, win or fail.

Add: I'm a Phillies fan, so you gotta know that I have some serious patience.....

Is there any better use for a SAK?

(Disclaimer: the Kelly Green Farmer model SAK depicted in the above photo sequence was unboxed using the challenge tool. Said Farmer model SAK was briefly examined for functionality and quality control and placed in storage in accordance with the universal standards of the decent and humane treatment of SAK's. At no time was said Farmer model SAK employed for actual task completion or carried for purposes of utilization. The challenge participant swears and affirms that the challenge knife, one Dark Green Pioneer X (PX) is the sole SAK carried for purposes of task completion and used to date for during the participant's participation in the referenced 30-day Pioneer X challenge. All insinuations, aspersions, and claims to the contrary are hereby peremptorily refuted.)

Could you post a picture of the PX next to a regular Pioneer, from the top?  I'd like to see the width difference. Thanks!!

No, I can't.... :o

It turns out that I don't have...and I find this hard to believe...a standard Pioneer. I believe that the Soldier is the same as a Pioneer, but without the key ring.

In order of left to right:

1. Silver SI ('84)
2. Red Soldier
3. Dk Green Pioneer X
4. Kelly Green Farmer

That works!  I have been thinking of upgrading my daily carry to the Pioneer X, but didn't want to go too thick.  That's not bad at all!

I'll say that the SI/Soldier/Pioneer is a noticeably slimmer knife that carries very easily. So far, the Pioneer X is a very nice carry knife, but I do notice it in my pocket more often.

I'm a big Cadet fan, especially for days at the office. I (everyone) can easily carry a cadet in any situation. I keep a Cadet on a neck chain for when I'm running around in clothes without pockets.

Can't say that for the Pioneer X. It's bigger and heavier and more present. I wouldn't carry it in dress pants, suit pants, or a tuxedo (not that that comes up much).

I used my kitchen scale to weigh each knife for you:

1. Silver SI ('84):               71 grams
2. Red Soldier:                  69 grams
3. Dk Green Pioneer X     93 grams
4. Kelly Green Farmer      85 grams

So, not a huge difference, but the PX is still 34% heavier than a Soldier. For me, the extra width and weight is worth it: I really like scissors, especially when traveling, camping, or hiking. I don't think you'll be sorry if you get a Pioneer X.

...of course this is just day 2 of the challenge.
