Hidden rivets in 1957. Victorinox actually did it.
on: August 14, 2017, 05:35:22 PM
So, when did Victorinox start making closed rivets? Many collectors believe it is 1961, but others think it is 1957. I also believe that 1957 was a transitional year for Victorinox as they launched the Elinox line, began to make Alox Pioneer knives, changed their design of the wood saw (no nail nick now, opening from the tip), changed the blade stamp from VO CB to VOS CB and VSS to VSSR and, as everyone knows, changed nickel silver tweezers head to aluminum. Yesterday Victorinox knife with an advertising 1957 inlay with closed rivets was sold on ricardo.ch. Unfortunately, I did not win that auction and the seller's photos are not very good quality. Anyway, what do you think?

1957. No question. The 1961 date comes from an error in Victorinox documentation.

I have that exact same knife - picked it up a couple years ago on eBay. I'll try to post a pic later if interested.

as everyone knows, changed nickel silver tweezers head to aluminum.

Only thing I disagree with. Empirically, aluminum tweezers don't show up until c 1963. Every single knife I've seen from 1957-1961 (hidden rivets, large awl) have nickel-silver tweezers. Even some of the early small awl knives have NS tweezers.

So, the bail with hidden rivet/large awl era would be from 57 to 61?

I think so too  :salute: 1957-1961 or some time later, until the old parts run out.

Hello, guys. This topic is very interesting, thanks for it.
All the photos above of knives, which were produced in 1957 (or a bit before it), do not have any shackle. And victorinox.metodi.me teaches us (at least me), that it disappeared in 1968.
Due to this I have a question: what about a shackle? We have spoken about changing of hidden rivets appearing date, so it would be logical to assume that the date of shackle disappearing might/has to be changed too.
Where is my mistake?

Not all SAK models had a bail/shackle.  :)
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!
