Sharpfinger rehandle and new sheath.
on: February 18, 2023, 06:00:33 PM
A while back I picked up a three piece Old Timer gift set from my local Basspro. I was not impressed by the quality of these knives and decided to make some improvements.

The Sharpfingers handles were plastic and hollow and just felt terrible and too light in my hand. So, I rummaged through my box of odds and sods and found a nice piece of Indonesian rosewood to use. Pinned, epoxied and sanded to shape it felt much better. I purposely left them on the rougher side to give them that “look”.

Next I moved on to the sheath. The original nylon one was, frankly, hot garbage. I haven’t done any leather projects for a while so I was a bit rusty but otherwise it turned out pretty good and is a huge improvement over the stock sheath.

Great job! I bought a different Old Timer gift set before Christmas, and likewise I was very disappointed with the handles.

Thanks! I noticed that they are making a generational series. Made in the USA and from nicer materials. Looks like proper slab handles and if I remember correctly carbon steel, which I wish this one was. Next I need to work on the edge which was ground unevenly.

Is it hollow ground?  If not a nice convex should do the trick for you  :dunno:.

It is hollow ground. The edge is pretty even right up until the tip where it strays off center. It’s not a huge portion of the edge so shouldn’t be much trouble to adjust.

How’s this for a trio? The Classic had badly damaged scales and a broken backspring, the Camper had marred blades and tools, a bent corkscrew and the scales were cracked.  All with Rosewood scales/handles. Not much you couldn’t tackle with these in your pocket.

Thanks! Been wearing it on my belt around the yard since I made it and it is a handy blade. Sheath is working out well and is really slim. Don’t even notice it is there.

That trio is outstanding.  They'll age wonderfully as well.

Thank you, everybody!

I have another sheath on the bench for a knife that is very special to me. Can’t unveil it just yet but should be finished up tonight if I can find a few minutes.

Must have misplaced your address.

Have a dozen knives all boxed up and ready to send your way for wood handled goodness.

Great job!
