Looking for a multi tool
on: August 17, 2017, 08:22:51 PM
Hi guys. Just a quick question to see if I can get any suggestions from y'all.
I've carried knives for years and I have had several leathermen. Both the classic type and a few of the older supers. Still have them. They are good. But I'm looking for one I can replace my pocket knife with. I still use my leathermen. I keep a couple in the shop and one in my gig bag. (I play guitar). But I want one I can carry. So a pocket clip is a must. Optimally it would have a pair of pliers, a regular and Phillips screwdriver, a plain edge knife (serrated edges are no good to me really), and possibly a bottle opener. I don't really need anything else. Would you guys have any suggestions for something that is close or may work? Seeing as I want a pocket clip it looks like my options are slim..
Thank you

Skeletool with the older plain blade is fantastic.  Gerber crucial is cool if you're on a budget.

The Skeletool has replaced many knives in daily carry. Think of it as a one hand opening pocket knife that also has excellent medium duty pliers and screwdrivers, and of course, the bottle opener. I have one in my pocket now.  Only thing is it has a partially serrated knife blade. The Skeletool CX has a plain edge blade but costs more.

Leatherman Rev, or a Sideclip or Kick if you can find them.

The skeletool cx actually looks like kinda what I'm looking for. The sideclip perhaps more so though. Although the blade is not very long. But that isn't a big deal. I'll look into those.
How is the skeletool in the hand? It looks somewhat uncomfortable. Although maybe it isnt

I don't like the skeletool and find it has too many hot-spots for the hand and even more that can snag on your pants (see attached image). I also think its too expensive compared to other MTs, especially the PE one. However it fits your bill, so should you decide on a skeletool, I suggest you contact loki-mobile (good dude to trade with) to see if he still has PE blades and buy a regular one (that should save you a penny or two).

Other tools that fit your bill

CRTK Tool-Zilla  / Tool-Zilla Jr
SOG SwitchPlier 2
SOG Micro-Toolclip (that one is quite small)
Buck X-tract family

Personally, of all tools I favor the Victorinox Spirit for pocket carry. It has no clip (sadly) but it is slim and smooth which makes for a comfortable pocket tool.

I second Etheralicer's options. The first thing that came to mind was the Buck X-Tract, but the others would do nicely as well.
A little Leatherman information.

Skeletool CX will fit that bill nicely. It was the first leatherman that became part of my edc. It took over duty of many folders and has been with me just about everyday for a couple years.

I've carried a Vic Spirit exclusively now as my only mt and haven't looked back!
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

If you like you can mod the regular Skeletool with a CX blade. Better steel.

There are also different versions of Skeletool you can check out. I'm just a casual user but I believe most folks consider it a light-medium use pliers. So just something to remember.

The year is almost over, who knows maybe Leatherman will have a better 2018 tool if you can wait. 👍

Multi-tool depend on your need, I prefer Multi-tool with plier, scissors n knife. all this is needed during fishing.
I only use Multi-tool during fishing. I don't need saw. I prefer Gerber cos the plier easy to deploy n one hand
operation. further more the scissors are super sharp, other Multi-tool scissors don't work for me. it can't cut
braided fishing line.

I concur with most that a Skeletool CX would suit, but I suggest handling one before purchasing as many find the pliers uncomfortable.
I throw one in my gig bag.  :salute:

Welcome to :MTO: and good luck in the MT hunting :salute: :like:

Plenty of great suggestions so far and I will out another vote for the Skeletool CX or a very first year regular Skeletool (they also had a plain edge blade  )

Sideclip is a great one but getting harder to find the same goes for the Kick :tu:
