Shot in the dark, Sheath I.D.
on: August 21, 2017, 05:59:10 PM
First, I realise that identifying a random sheath is rather unlikely.  :D

As I'm still waiting for my Skinth to arrive( :wait:  :P ), anything sheath related that distracts me is welcome.
I was in an army surplus store this morning (am in Ireland) and found this in a box of sheaths. A bit of an odd duck, as 98% of the other sheaths were identical to each other, a totally different design and colour from this one.  :think:
This was the only one of it's kind in the box, and it interested me, especially for 3 EUR.  :ahhh

The stitching, by and far, is of a consistent length, implying a sewing machine, but the lines are not... entirely straight.
And some of the parts haven't been sewed on entirely straight, and aren't quite the same colour.

Despite that, it appears to be nice and strong.
Most of it is double layer, with the exception of the outer part of the pocket.
And the snap on the belt loop is welcome. One of the things I don't like about sheaths in general is the way you can't take them off without undoing your belt, but I've only bought like two sheaths, including this one, so what do I know?  :rofl:

Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Maybe it's a magazine pouch?   I also like sheaths that can be taken off with out having to remove my belt.  Clips are ok but I like the molle attachment with button better.  Nice score.

That's an idea.  :think: :tu:
I wonder how to make sense of the number on the back.  :think:

Could be as simple as a "part" number when the sheath was ordered.

Thing is, you'd need a catalog or something to make sense of that number.  :think:

I second that it is a mag pouch.  That it was sold in a surplus store but in new condition indicates that it may have been a production overrun or a factory second.  The number is probably a mil-spec number and since you're in Ireland it is probably something issued to Irish forces but it could just as well be from anywhere. :like:

I'll throw a third in here and say it's almost certainly a mag pouch. I have a few varieties that were US military issued and the form factor is generally the same across the board. I like them, especially the Gerber ones  :tu:
They will fit just about any full size MT, though some have a metal drainage grommet that can scratch the finish, if one cares about that sort of thing. I have one very well used Gerber that was issued and took a beating, and it has a buckle closure instead of velcro. Those seem to be a bit less common. At any rate, good find!

Bit of a late reply.  :facepalm:
But wanted to raise a point.

What do you define as a full size tool?
I'm wondering if this pouch is smaller for some reason.

The maximum depth is about 75mm, or a tad under 3 inches.
But because of the tapering at the bottom, the max depth available depends on the thickness of what you put in.
A Leatherman Kick, which I get the impression is a very thin tool for it's size, goes in about 70mm (or 2.75 inches), leaving 30mm or 1.25 inches sticking out, which seems like a lot, certainly enough to prevent me from closing the flap as far down as it should go.  :think:

Just wondering if I a got a pouch meant for Ant gun sized mags.  :rofl:
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

Hm...That is rather small. My shallowest example still accommodates a Gerber Center Drive fairly well;

The buckled one, which looks the smallest due to having an undersized flap (no need for a bigger one if you don't have velcro) and more V-shaped pouch, is actually a bit roomier;

Lastly, the most average one, with just a velcro closure, has the most wiggle room around the GCD;

Yup, those are positively huge compared to my one.  :D
Maybe it was meant to carry some sorta small mag?  :think:

Compact pistol mag, perhaps? Who knows, maybe the factory goofed and made a run of them with the wrong specs.

The Irish army does have two 9mm pistol models, but I have no idea if a 9mm pistol has small enough mags.  :ahhh

Look too small for a mag pouch to me and it doesn't follow the pattern of Brit issue so I'd guess at Irish Army but no idea as to purpose
