Question: why not a sewing awl on the Trekker?
on: August 21, 2017, 06:50:43 PM
I really like the 111mm size and feel of the Trekker and OHT. Makes a great camping knife with the saw, long blade, can opener, and tweezers. But I am confused as to why Victorinox chose to use a reamer/awl instead of a sewing awl for the back tool set.

Anyone know why they made this choice?  ???

Yup, they should have done that. One more tool/use with no added weight. Maybe it's because drilling the hole is difficult and/or time consuming?...

For a field/backpacking knife, a sewing awl would have scored a home run.  You've asked the question I've been meaning to ask for a long time!

Good question, here's my solution.  :salute:

When I ruined modified my Master RT to get rid of the pesky back Phillips, I also added a 91mm awl.

I have also been meaning to drill the awl on my Pioneer X, it would be a fairly simple mod, but I keep putting it off.

For an outdoors hiking/camping knife, Vic should have included that tool without question. Sometimes I wonder how/why they come up with the tool combos they do.

It's nearly the perfect camp knife already. Having the awl would have made it priceless to have in the outdoors.

Nice mod twiliter!

I'm especially confused by this 'issue' since the 130mm Wenger and it's spin-off Victorinox both have sewing awls.

Not sure, but whith Victorinox step away from sliding lock to linerlock it seems they eliminated all the sewing awls on their 111mm lines.
