Confession: I don't get the Executive
Reply #240 on: September 15, 2017, 05:43:31 PM
With all the talk about the Executive, today I gave it a second chance.  Presenting the orange peeler, surprisingly very good at this task, but I did have to wipe it down as I don't want it it being sticky from the orange juice.

I must say that I now have a new appreciation for this tool.  I hate peeling oranges and dread making a mess when I do.  I will now be eating a lot more :)

Well I always buy a bag of oranges and eat only 20% of them because I don't like peeling them.  The executive makes the job a lot quicker and cleaner.  I can peel them at work and not get my desk dirty. I see a lot more oranges in my future.

What the hey, I decided to start early. Dug out my black Exec, packed away everything else, and took my knife box key off my keyring.

Cool!
Now if you just keep the filthy keys away from your food, it's all good. LOL!

On a serious note: Did you honestly find the peeler tool to be better at the task than the standard blade?

That SAK made me think of the line from the movie Patton where he explained that his Colt revolver had ivory grips, not pearl.

Nice topic--I just had to take a look!

I should know better that to immerse myself in yet another SAK discussion since I ended up getting two from e-bay. Why two? I was following an auction for a very nice looking Executive that I intended to get but got busy and it closed before I bid. There were two others (black and red scale combos each with a Classic). I put my maximum on each to give myself a good chance of getting one and ended up winning both auctions.

This was a SAK that I have ignored in the past probably due to the gunked up appearance of the samples I have seen. I don't need an orange peeler but that tool looks like a good blister package opener. Both SAKs just arrived in the mail while I was typing this.

I keep hearing about the orange peeler' s effectiveness with blister packages, but haven't tried it. How good is it really with that super thick plastic?

I don't get the Executive

Me neither - or the 74mm range for that matter  ???

Seems to me you get the worst of both worlds / avoid the best of the others

You do not get the convenience of the 58mm - which just disappear in your pocket / on your keyring
And you don't get the sturdiness/length/variety of the 91mm.

And for someone who thinks the 91mm secondary blade is superfluous - Then two blades on this wee thing is ridiculous !!    :pok:

I do have one, and carried it for a while - Did not like it :(  - Eg It was not great at cutting up my daily apple !
I guess as a 'dress' SAK it could be OK

I actually think it's better, the curve is what really helps. It wraps around the orange itself making the job cleaner and easier.  I would not go and buy the exec if I already had the small blade, but it actually works pretty well for the task.

With the CYC wrapping up, I'm curious as to whether or not any of the participants have a change of opinion.

We're not wrapping up just yet! Still 4 full days to go. And at least one member is just getting started on a CYC.

I was planning on doing a full "After Action Report" following my completion of the CYC, but I'll give you a brief answer to your question for myself: Yes and No.

Too brief?

OK, they say that familiarity breeds contempt; in this case, they are wrong. To use this little knife is to love it. It's just a dynamite little package with more capability than one might guess at first glance. For me, it's an effortless EDC that disappears into the pocket. While not having every tool I like having on a SAK (Not much short of a Climber does.), it has a very useful array of instruments. On the other hand, I still think there is some wasted space in this little package. That orange peeler is fun to use, but....I don't need it. I'd prefer a more dedicated driver/opener tool. The redundancy of three (3) cutting tools continues to strike me as being odd in such a tiny knife. Let's face it, it's not a Swiss Champ.

So that's a brief and premature response to your query from my perspective. Other CYC participants may view things differently, of course. The challenge isn't over yet, and there's still more to learn. I have a few things I'd like yet to try. I'll post up some more thoughts after I have completed the challenge, but I can tell you the quirky little Executive is staying in my collection.  :D :salute:

Thx.  It does make more sense to wait until it fully completed and a follow-up thread created.

I can't wait to read from the participants.

Interesting thoughts and I look forward to reading more.  A big reason I refrained from participating in the CYC is I use a bottle opener on a daily basis...   that, and I end up cutting sandwiches, burritos, and other foods and the 74mm blade is not very suitable for these tasks... you end up having to push the scales into whatever you're cutting and that is neither sanitary nor cool.

I'm surviving the challenge.  I did run into a time when I had to go to pliers,  but I don't fault the Executive since pliers are out of scope. I've been carrying mine on a dangler with my Olight aaa flashlight.  This package is small enough to fit in the change pocket of dress pants,  along side a tube of lip balm.  It carried well in a suit,  or jeans.  I did open a beer bottle with the orange peeler driver. But,  I wouldn't want to do that every day. The nail file turned Philips screws,  untied knots,  scraped, pried open pull tabs,  filed grooves in wood,  stirred liquids,  acted as a straight edge,  filed sharp edges of soft metal, scraped stickers off items,  acted as a pointer,  and probing tool, make shift toothpick,  and even a mirror.

The orange peeler peeled oranges, bananas, and pomegranates. It turned screws,  scraped,  sliced open packages,  scraped fingernails,  opened bottles,  blister packages, and pried things apart such as battery compartment doors.

Both blades are easy to get hair popping sharp.  The small blade cut paper,  cardboard,  paracord, food wrappers,  threads, and acted as a digging tool, and wood carving tool. It's nice to hold the knife like a pen for detailed work where I high degree of control is needed.  It was subtle enough to shave very thin layers of wood during carving.

The large blade was used less often,  but is just large enough for pear-sized fruit, and thinner chicken breasts. It will cut through thick cardboard with care not to bend the blade.

My screw pivot scissors worked,  but were frustrating to use.  My newer Money Clip's scissors are wonderful for my larger hands and work much better due to the alignment groove.

I think this knife is heavy for its size,  and i could do without the orange peeler,  as long as it retained a flat screw driver. I'm thinking the Wenger PCT might be a better mix of tools, but don't have first experience with it (trades would be welcomed).

I had an Executive till I lost it. I don't miss it. I have no desire to get another one.

I have a Pocket tool chest.  I bought another on just in case I lose it because I use it every day. Believe it or not the 65mm knife blade works great as an orange peeler.
