I usually just oil then and keep them sharp :salute: but I have used several methods for cleaning them up after buying them second hand :salute:

I have used a vinegar bath for rust, a rust eraser and even sand paper to clean tools  I usually use either a mineral oil or a dry type lube like 3in1 oil that dries quickly :tu: I have also use polishing paste to shine metal as well

Nice looking set of knives, Barry!

I usually sharpen and strop as I go. If I use a knife, I'll strop it....if I have the chance. I like to keep my knives ready for use at awl times.

For lubricants, I like mineral oil or Ballistol. The drawback of Ballistol is that it can dry and become gummy, so thin coatings are recommended. The upside of Ballistol is that it cleans as well as lubricates--it is sort of the original CLP. It is also non-toxic, so you can use it to clean your knives (and firearms) and not worry about then using them on food or game. Same for food-grade mineral oil.

If I get some real gunk on my knives, I'll clean them with alcohol, kerosene, or WD-40. But, after the gunk is cleaned off, I clean them with soap and water, and then Ballistol.

Sidol metal polish for anything metal -like or scratched up.
Warm soap bath with a toothbrush rub down and some mineral oil to top it off.
My besties get genuine Vic oil...

Sharpening happens in between and I usualy get amazing results on my honing steel.

Mechy, the original formula is from.....Germany. I think that's a country in Europe. So it may be hard for you to find. Let me know and I'll see if I can smuggle some to you.

From the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet):

Quote
Most corrosion inhibiting lubricants can only protect against  normal oxidation. They do so by covering up the surface,
which they are supposed to protect, and prevent contact with water and air. Due to its alkalinity Ballistol can also protect
against galvanic corrosion, acidic corrosion and salt water corrosion. Ballistol contains oxygen binders. They make the
oxygen,  contained  in  water  or  air,  unavailable  for  oxidation.  Due  to  its  low  surface  tension,  Ballistol  is  capable  of
creeping into the smallest openings even against gravity. Accordingly, Ballistol provides not only passive but also active
protection against corrosion. However, Ballistol is not a permanent coating or paint. Its protective effect will be the stronger the more often it is re-applied.

Usually just a quick couple swipes on the Lansky Turnbox and a little mineral oil for lube.

Wipe everything to get rid of gunk, use picks in tight places, WD-40 for tougher stuff, and sharpen on ceramic rods or a Lansky set.

The tools I use often I typically clean up and touch up weekly or more if needed.  My routine is to inspect then proceed as follows.  To clean I'll use soap and water with an old toothbrush.  If I need to really get into the cracks and crevices then I'll opt for a toothpick and paper-towel following a soak in hot soapy water.  For the blades, I'll strop if only touch up is needed.  Typically my SAK falls into this category.  My Charge TTi rarely needs anything but I like to strop because, well, I like the process.  If my SAK has been used a lot then I'll give it a few swipes on my Spyderco ceramic rods then strop.

I don't remove scratches anymore on my tools.  I only remove damage that hinders the use of the tool.  Every now and again I might give my SAK scales a once over on green compound I use for stropping.  That shines up the scales nicely without actually removing scratches.

I just clean and oil the users for the most part, and just use mineral oil since it's food safe.  If I'm storing carbon steel for a while though, I coat the blades with Tuf-Cloth dry lubricant.  It's a great product for this, as it leaves a thin dry wax-like coating on the steel that will not let moisture through.  It works great on blued steel as well, and love the smell of it.
