Old And New Swisstool
on: October 25, 2008, 07:51:10 AM
I have one of each, and here are just a couple of differences I spotted. There are more than these, but these will have to do for now  :)

Below is the older model plier head with no hard wire notch on the cutters

Below is the newer model with TWO notches in the cutters! I've looked closely, and neither notch is damage. Each notch is clearly formed.

Below are the phillips drivers, the old on the left, and newer on the right. I hope you can all see that the newer model tool has a quite noticeably squared off driver, while the old driver comes to much more of a point. So it appears to me that Victorinox have responded to criticism of the phillips driver.

Great comparison shots mate :tu:

That's the beauty of the Vic ethos, there tool's are constantly evolving and being refined, rather than being binned after a couple of years :)

I just checked out my ST. It has a 1998 plier head (purchased new bout 6 years ago) and one notch in it for what I presume hard wire cutting and it does a good job at it. I'll try to take a pic tomorrow.

well since you asked. my pics are not that good but should suffice. yeas there's some tiny bit of rust residue on the ST but it comes off easily. I'm very close to the ocean and the tool has and still sees some hard use.

The Very early Swisstools had no hardwire notch ,later ones although still with the old style plier head had a single hard wire notch. The later bigger plier heads had the two notchs .

zzz rust residue, not rust. a few sprays of wd40 and a bit of cloth work and it's all gone. This tool has served me well and I always take care of it.

So whats the point of TWO notches?  They're nearly the same size.

The one at the base is for hard wire, and the secondary notch is for copper wire- I think. I have to say, the new design doesn't cut soft wire very well!  :(

Is that because of the cutter design or because the plier has too much pivot play?  Does anyone else have a negative view of the newest wire cutter design?

Does the new pliers on the ST Spirit share this new two notch design?

Hardly any MT pliers cut soft wire cleanly, but the ST will do it after a fashion :)

Sort of, it's hard to explain that one.

Basically, the ST will cut them, but maybe not in the easiest or cleanest way.
