Just tried it too - it seems to work, at least to an extent... I wonder how much torque you can apply before you overcome the lock spring though, but then again you can apply additional finger pressure...

Edit: it would be ideal to have a more positively locking solution...

I think it would work for most screws that small. I don't think you need a lot of torque. But yes Ideally you would have a more positive lock.

The next iteration in the eternal quest for yet more versatility on the ST 300 VX.

I've ground down the surplus small bit holder along the lines above, taking into account the handle contour and drilled a 5.5 mm hole (this just about fits), then used a Wave pivot and a washer, all locked with the original ST pivot screw. Behold the pieces and the results. The pivot is a tad long, hence the need for the extra washer (about 1.5 mm thick). Let's see how this mod holds up - to obviate the need for the washer I might shorten the pivot a bit but that requires some serious thought as to fixing in the lathe... I might also play around with the position of the washer.

Parental advisory: no multitools were harmed in the process of this modification, as spare parts were used exclusively.

Thanks Steve

I have made a small modification to the setup. I found I preferred to have the washer on the other side of the handle - then I found out that the original pivot lock screw covered too little area, so I swapped it for the Wave counterpart, which could then make do with a thinner 0.9 mm washer (slightly ground off to match the handle  contour). Much more pleasing to the eye, I think, but see for yourselves...

excellent work, DT!

I am just now seeing this thread for the first time, and I am thoroughly impressed. :salute:

one question about the solution you came up with for the small bit driver... does it rotate around the pivot at all, or does it stay in place pretty well? it almost looks like the tool might benefit from a similar shaped block on the other pivot as well to hold it in place when the straight edges line up.

Thanks! The small bit driver sits pretty tight. You'd have to use more force than you'd likely use on a small screw to pivot it. But the counterblock is a good idea... I have a washer there, ground off to face the handle slope to inhibit rotation on that side.

Looks great... really nice work :tu:

you're probably right about the amount of force it would take to actually cause the small bit driver to rotate while you're using it... but I figured it was still worth asking about. ;)

Ah, you left it pivotable did you? Nice :like: and you're very welcome! I wanted it smaller, compact and fixed - on the few occasions I'll likely be using the small driver, I'll get it out of the bit card and insert it in the ST.

Yet more versatility added. Inspired by a post I read somewhere here in which someone added tweezers and toothpick in scales added to a Wave or Charge I decided to design scales for the ST 300 VX and fire up my trusty 3D printer.

The scales are, for now, of ABS and stuck to the handles with automotive grade double sided tape. Depending on experiences gained I may convert the material and the fixing method as needed. Shapeways does pretty nifty metal 3D printing jobs, so that is a possible option.

I have added the scales on both handles so I have some empty slots, which I plan to fill with Firefly ferro rods once they are brought out.

Serious? Only fits the ST 300 (alignment ridges fall into the handle spring slots) and the rough print requires a bit of filing and sanding to make it fit...

Word of caution: with two such scales the handle nubs on the tweezers and toothpick need filing off lest they come into conflict with any other items located on the opposite handle when the pliers are used on very thin material.

Thanks, all :hatsoff:

Decided to take it to work today.

The compact toolbox:

The contents. Most prominently the ST 300 VX, of course.

A few remarks:

- Whilst the scales I added seem to hold for now, this is down mainly to the central flat part which rests against the handles via double-sided tape. The lateral flat parts turn out to have less contact with the underlying metal, despite the double-sided tape present there as well. It seems in addition that this tape is subject to creep and pushed off slightly by the immense spring force of the tweezers. I need to play around with other kinds of tape. If that doesn't work out I'll have to consider other attachment methods, such as (super- or epoxy) glue, bearing in mind that I can't be too liberal applying it as I don't want to inhibit the function of the handle springs. I'd rather avoid having to drill in the handles for additional fixing points, although a small hole or two shouldn't compromise structural integrity of the handles overmuch.

- The handle nubs of the tweezers and toothpick need filing down to become completely flush with the top surface of the scales, as I noticed when I extracted the ST from the (newly packed) holster and nearly lost the tweezers. However, as the scales are relatively flat, the ST still easily fits in the holster. Edit: in addition, the tops of the locks are now flush with the scales and not as likely to snag behind the holster liner or any other items.

Progress reports will continue!

PS. zoidberg, you have a PM
