DAY 6 OF THIRTY
Changing a faulty ignitor assembly with the Surge and bit extender.
The Bit extender is a true pleasure and makes the Surge a very formidable MT.
First thing other than OHO to best the Swisstool.  Okay I take that back, I found a few days ago that the plier Jaws do open a little wider than the Swisstool,  allowing a usable grip on things that the Swisstool slips on.
This definately is turning out to be an interesting challenge.

Looks like some nasty, sticky, cooked-on food oil/grease there. What do you use to clean that stuff off your hands and tools?

Joes, for the hands, Mineral Oil and an old tooth brush to clean out grooves and crevices on the tools.
Just an FYI that one was CLEAN compaired to some of the equipment I deal with.

DAY 7 of 15
Falling even more for the bit extender, makes a perfect screwdriver in the Surge, the off-set dosen't even bother me.  Then the knerling on the shaft makes the extender by alone easy to grip and get considerable torque despite it's small diameter.  Also gave both sides of the Leatherman file a work out today and both are impressive.  Crosscut side is very agressive and the diamond side puts on a quick and pleasent finish.  Just didn't manage any photos of the file at work.
We'll see what tomorrow will bring.

That bit extender is awesome. I am ordering one as soon as my paycheck drops in! I have needed one for my surge and wave since I bought the two.
I've used the gerber bit thing, but it is wider than the LM and shorter.
Hey Douglas,
Does the extender have a c-clip inside of the holder end, or is it magnetic? I ssk, because I use my MT for computer work at home occasionally. :P

The extender uses a c-clip / spring to enguage the bit.  Due to the length of the Leatherman multi-bits the chock is a little deeper than a normal bit holder and regular bits sit deep into the chock.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Douglas! The depth will be fine. I have a couple of sets of craftsman bits that are 1/4" longer than standard bits. Got them on sale when our sears closed. :)
I have been thinking about bit storage and have come up with a solution for 1/4" hex bit storage. I have a few of those bit sleeves that come with cheap MTs with bits, and my craftsman bits fit them fine and slide into an old LM PST sheath I have (you can still get the LM 3.9" leather box pst sheath as well) left over.
Edit: Picture of bits in sheath!. No shaking and room for the extender piece. I will put my Surge in a basic box sheath without the extra storage and place the pst sheath behind it on my belt or carry the pst sheath with bits in my pocket. :D

I am pretty sure a section of a pencil eraser stuck in the bottom of the adapter would provide more clearance should you ever need it.

Well for the last few days I've been singing the praises of the Surge so a little balance is due today.  At first I considered it a fluke but several times now I've flipped the pliars closed butterfly style and several of the inside tools come open.  This causes me to have to open the handles back up to put them away.  I also have had a hard time with the inside tools coming out when flipping the pliar handles open.  I just can't seem to get used to the "clogging" when getting out an inside tool.  Call me nuts but when I want a specific tool, I only want that tool.   These are all things that with enough use, time or just plain not knowing any differant are insignificant, but I am used to the Swisstool.  So I just need to realize the two are differant and function different.  Maybe we could design a MT that takes the best of both and combines them.  That would truely be an ultimate tool.

Two T10 Security Torx bits from harbor freight(or somewhere else. as long as the torx bits have the center hole) would help tighten the tools a bit. I do the one hand butterfly on my wave and surge (as well as the Super tool, core, and pst), so I tighten the tool screws to stop them from coming open. Hope that helps, as tools flying open can be dangerous. :o

 :like:  Understand that one.
So Ponch how do you like the Olight? It is rechargable right?  Do you pocket cary it and if so has it ever come on in your pocket.  I cary a Zebrelight SC62 because it has a recessed switch that prevents accidental activation.

Well it didn't go as planned and we didn't rebuild that slicer, but we did do a rewire...
Realy like the serrated blade just concerned about sharpening as all blades eventualy dull.  The scissors are powerfull for a MT but not as precise as Vic's so it's a little tougher stripping smaller wire and there realy is no other way with the Surge unlike the Swisstool.  Still the Surge is more than up to the test on jobs like this.   :tu:

One of the neat little tricks LM has. Even the lowly wingman has the can opener stripper. Not a good can opener(compared to Vics), but an effective wire stripper at least. :)

I was also gonna mentioned the wire stripper :D So far I love the newer Surge more than the older style but will try and carry the older style one for a couple days and see if my decision is still the same

Been a great thread and wished I could make it for all 30 days and get that badge but the 15 day badge will still be pretty nice :tu: :like:

So now being 10 days into this directly on the heals of the ST challenge Ponch, how would you classify the differances between them?
Unless I am realy off target your a true Leatherman Guy first, so your prespective would be 180 degrees from mine as a Vic Guy.

Not to mention terminal crimper tool.  Need to try that one sense I use a nuber of solderless crimp connectors at work.  :tu:

The newer style feels much nicer in hand and less rattley :D They took a bit more time with the design this go round and worked out a few of the older styles problems it seems  The older style is still great so don't get me wrong ;) The plier head on the older one is one point I like better on it though as the replaceable cutters are fine but if they loosen any then they won't cut very well but the non-replaceable cutters don't suffer that problem :D The newer and older style are very much still the same tool and most of the differences are minor and unless you had them side by side then you probably wouldn't even notice them :tu: I still prefer the box style LMs though I think  Time will tell :D
