Folks, Remade Knives just decided to release its 91mm scale 3D model for the public to print as much scales as one wants. I contacted a local 3D printer and said he can produce a set of 91mm scales at $2 each using plastic, and $3 using carbon fiber for a minimum order of 11 and 15 sets respectively.

What do you think are the pros and cons of doing this?  ???

Here's the 3D file released for public use

The announcement can be read on their FB page here

Yes, see actual scales shared with me. Last I heard an updated design is in the works, with tighter tolerance

Im actually organizing a group buy in my country as some said its worth the risk to try it out here. The guy with the 3D printer I contacted said he can even do wood. But he hasn't worked with SAKs before so I have some concerns.... :-\

Great idea and definitely worth looking into, though the shipping costs out of country will greatly diminish the pricing paradigm. But I like the concept!  :like:

I wouldn't be too worried about him being SAK experienced or not. The primary concern in additive manufacturing is whether or not their machine and the way they operate it can produce parts to tolerance and to the best mechanical properties of the material  :tu:
much like a machinist, if you give them good data to produce a part and they do their job well on decent equipment, you'll get a very functional end product.

I think I get what you mean. Im also concerned about the plastic material he will use as it's most probably not nylon and definitely not cellidor, given the price estimate he gave ($2 per pair).

I also heard SwissBianco said in his video that while his scales are CNC milled, the SAK frames are not and rivets might need adjustments. So I'm concerned that the plastic chosen by the printer might be brittle (?). So now I'm curious to know what exact plastic material to ask. I'll discuss with  the printer.

As for the carbon fiber, here are the samples he gave

I downloaded it.
Haven't got a 3D printer but you never know when it may come in handy.

And don't want to risk it going offline again soon :D

I'm in for a couple ... Do you need all at once.. is there a sample, a pallette of colours etc.?

In for both carbon fiber and plastic.

Note Czech to Romania should be cheap to ship and most importantly, no customs.

Ow... scratch that.. I misstook the Phillipine flag for Czech.. darn...

Well.. if UK group order, I'm in.. if not...

Looks good guys   :tu:
That's great news for the guys who love the customized sak's

Personally I won't be interested because as much as customized sak's look good and interesting to look at, as far as cellidor sak's go for me there is only one color and material, classic red cellidor :D

If only Victorinox sells their scales locally but they refuse to. My guess is Victorinox (or their country distributor here) prefer that customers buy new SAKs rather than install new scales  :twak:
