Just wondering how many of you guys have sak's that are just for      purposes and are not being used at all  :climber: which are the ones you absolutely NOT use?? My only real EDC knive is a Swisschamp but i would absolutely never take my Mauser and Stag hunter 108mm with me...  How do you guys store your knives? I have mine in a closed closet but im finding a solution for this soon!

  • I'm blue!
I've been carrying the same SAK combo for about six months now (Pioneer Solo, Carver, PX, MiniChamp) but that doesn't mean I do not carry my other SAKs. I just don't carry them every day. I did have some shelf queens but I sold them.

The ones that I don't use, are either mod fodder, or ones that I haven't gotten around to selling yet. I don't want to own any shelf queens

For me, the fun is in the using, not the owning  :)

All my SAK's are for using. I feel sorry for Safe Queen's that never live up to their full potential.

I understand, my girlfriend also buys her knives just for using purposes. Anyway i love to just play a bit around with em and putt them somewhere where they don't get dirty  :climber: Except the Swisschamp(but i think that who owns a swisschamp don't need another knive at all to be honestly) It is a genious sak:) I was guessing about buying an XAVT but i do consider this very very unusable and to large for me though  :climber:

I used to have at least as many carry options, and I'm now trying to get it down to twelve.

(I was originally planning for ten, but that proved too painful to comprehend :ahhh)

What are your favorites ?

Mine? Here's the twelve I have in mind

74mm Ambassador (Modified) - still on the drawing board
84mm Tourist - first Swiss knife I bought
84mm Salesman
84mm Climber Small
84mm Mega84 V1 (Mod) - changes planned. Awaiting funds for parts.
85mm Brian (Mod) - No further changes planned
85mm Soft Touch 14
85mm Brushed Stainless Traveler
85mm Evowood 14
85mm Mega85 (Still on the drawing board)
91mm Compact
91mm Sheepsfoot Duke (Mod) Further changes planned
91mm Cybertool41
91mm Voyager Lite
91mm Horn Scaled Huntsman
91mm Mega91 (Design pretty much finalised. Awaiting funds for parts)
93mm Mega93 (Design pretty much finalised. Awaiting funds for parts)

That's 17 of the 12  .... well, I did say aiming for 12, and I think it might be possible to get there, so long as I don't count 58s or 65s

For reference, the smaller ones include Classics, Manager, Alox Rambler, Clipper, and Brushed Stainless PTC  ::)

Hmm...well, I have a black Classic SD with the seal of the US Army where the Victorinox shield usually is. I bought it at the PX when I was in the Army. It's special to me and I don't carry it so I guess it's for show. It's not NIB, though. I used to EDC it so it's not clean and shiny anymore.

Yeti,

I have two Air Force Classics (see Avatar), one purchased at the BX at Peterson, the other purchased at the BX at Andrews, when I thought I lost the first one. One goes in the daily rotation, the other is holding a spot in a FAK.

The only thing to do with a SAK is use it! Carry that US Army Classic with pride, my man! Wear that sucker out, until only the toothpick remains. Old Soldiers never die, they just smell that way.

I'm a collector with a large number of knives. Have a half-dozen users; the rest are stored in plastic trays.

Any SAK that I can easily replace with "lunch money saved over" is fair game -- Pioneer, Manager, Minichamp, Climber.  I can go as far as let my kids use/train with them.

Those which aren't easily replaced are "for home use only", but can still be used.

It usually depends on the cost -- a USD100 Cybertool 41 gets bag carry by myself but I'd be apprehensive to let the kids take it out by themselves.  They can bring the '86 SwissChamp though.  One just doesn't just walk in the SAK store and ask for warranty claims or order extras like bits, scales or even the mini screwdriver.

I EDC those which I can afford to loose one way or another (Pioneer, Manager, Minichamp, Climber)

for some reason I dont like to use my saks with transparent scales, like cybertool saphire, ruby huntsmen light, and silver tech saks. most of these I got when prices were much lower than todays market, so replacing them would hurt, and I guess I like keeping these 4-5 saks pristine, I do rotate all my others for use tho

  • What's the matter, kid? Don't ya like clowns?
I used to have most of my SAK's strictly for collecting and had a lot that I would never, ever imagine carrying, but I reached a point where I would carry anything I own. Life's short, enjoy em.

I don't have (and never had) any shelf queens either, never been a collector or had a collectors mind set. Apart from a few new copies of favourite models that I have for backup purposes and don't get used for obvious reasons, I feel that if I have something that's not going to get used at all then it's just taking up space and tieing up money. Oh and just on a side note, about 90% of all my sak's where bought new in stores, at street prices.
If I still have some stuff in that situation with me is because I'm also very attached to everything I have and its hard and strange for me to sell stuff.
Nevertheless, think I have way too much sak's (apart from backups) that hardly get used these days, and maybe I should get rid of some, redundancy or backup is only good or healthy as long as its relevant. A lot of the time "less is more"
