Brainstorming - 84mm fieldmaster sak
on: September 07, 2017, 03:30:52 PM
I've been thinking of a 84mm equivalent of fielmaster (once seen in the wild under the name of artisan?). So scissors, saw and philps from 84 mm donor.

If I understand correctly there are no 84 mm scissors? How hard is it to get a 84 mm sak that has them on ebay and what prices can I expect?

The rest of the tools are currently in the 84 lineup If I am not mistaken?

Also, do plus scales exist for 84 mm models?

Is it harder to peen 84 mm models compared to 91 mm ones?

That's it for now...  :D

The SAKs with 84mm scissors are quite difficult to get hold of nowadays and I have no idea how much they are on Ebay etc - maybe one of our US cousin collectors might have an idea.

Peening 84mm is no harder than 91mm - just done one for El-Corkscrew and it went pretty well.

Not sure about the plus scales

Good luck with it - It will be an excellent mod if you do it.  :salute:

I was afraid the scissors would be hard to get. The thing is, right now I don't have a few hundred € to spend on my EDC projects.

I know, I know, It is silly to constrain oneself with such mundane things as budget in things so vital to ones identity as EDC is, but I am just that shallow.  :D

You can get 84mm Golfers off the bay for around $25.
Not that big of a deal, I think.

Also, there's always the hard way: mod some 91mm scissors, but you would still need to get ahold of a spring.

So in short, get a 84mm Golfer. :)

What about Wenger 85mm scissors? Not for the Victorinox Scissor snobs but it might be feasible. I know the subject has been broached before and there is a Wenger Giant on the "For Sale" Thread, just sayin'.

Hm, so as long as I can get hold of a scissors I should be able to do it.

Then all I need is a 84mm tinker and some brass stock with appropriate diameters. That should not be a problem. The ebay seems to be lousy with them.

Now what about plus scales? I think I saw something like that. Either someone made them or they actually exist.  :gimme:

Grant had a pair of white 84mm plus scales in the MTO store, but they are gone now. He said that they weren't a mod, and that he would get more if he finds them.  :ahhh

I've been prowling the badlands of ebay for a while now searching for the elusive 84mm vic golfer. No luck so far. I've only seen one 84mm sak with scissors so far and the price was around 100 €. I think finding 84mm scissors indeed won't be a walk in the park.  :ahhh

For those of you that managed to get one of the golfer-s, what price could I expect?  :pok:

I got the ones with the screw pivot. Though I don't know it those and newer tools are compatible? I guess I should've asked before I bought them...

They also were not cheap. 42€ and 10€ for postage.  :D

Great! Now I must look up what diameter brass rods I need and I am good to go.

Ps: I just realized, there is no saw in the 84mm tinker. I have no idea why I thought there was one. Well, so I need to find another 84mm sak with a saw.

All 2.25mm...
But that size rod is rarer than hens teeth.  :ahhh
2.2mm is more common and works good.
If you can't find any (like me  ) you can stick some larger brass rod in a drill and file it down, repeatedly test fitting... Use 3/32" (or 2.5mm, but 3/32" is easier) for this.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

Lumberjack is now the walker... And yes, My First Victorinox has a version with the saw... just thought of the walker/lumberjack as it might be cheaper than the MFV...

I have only drilled out the holes of the 91mm scissor and inline phillips to 3mm for my mod..

Enlarging the holes should be ok... just note that you won’t be able to re-use the standard scales though

From what I've heard, it's tricky. You need carbide drill bits.
It would be easier to stick some larger brass rod into a drill and use a file to decrease the diameter.
I've found it quite easy to file 3/32 brass rod to the appropriate size when I figured out my technique. Filing down 2.5mm brass rod shouldn't be much harder, certainly easier than drilling out pivot holes.  :ahhh
