Franken-SAK
on: February 10, 2023, 09:44:35 PM
Today I had the opportunity to see a Special Franken-SAK. It's kind of a Cybertool L, but with added layers. A colleague at work bought it online and he isn't happy about it. He expected a Swisschamp.

So I gave him a backup Swisschamp from my collection and I took that Franken Cybertool home. What would you do? Keep it or get the Swisschamp back?

This SAK is custom built and has 10 layers, as wide as my main SAK, the XLT. Never saw anything like this one.

Is that two scissors layers side-by-side?

Interesting mod, for sure! I wonder why the modded wanted 2 sets of scissors side by side? Anyhow, it’ll be interesting to see what you do with it, ulzhan!

Yes. And it don't know why. They aren't even the same.

There are several other oddities on this one.

Two main blades, one serrated and also with old tang. One small blade was replaced with a hawkbill.

The inline Philips works also as a stopper for the bit holder, so no bit can get lost. On its opposite sits a Wenger wrench (yes, it came from a Wenger!). The spring is also very weird.

The metal saw is old style.

On its back we have 3 (three!) hooks. One with nail file.

There is no key ring attachment.

Some layers are pretty normal: Pliers and the wood saw.

I think I'm gonna keep this oddball. The son of my colleague is happy, he wanted a real swisschamp and not some mutant Franken-SAK.

I also don't know why it was built in this way.

This one will also doesn't have a name.

Lol, three hooks?

I don’t even like the one hook on my SAKs.

I think you made a good trade, the frankensak is awesome. If torn down it would be the source for some great mod parts.

I think that’s what I’d do with it - pretty unusable at 10 layers but some great parts there. Nice set if Duke of Edinburgh scales too. Good trade whatever you decide to do with it.  :tu:

Yeah, we finalized the trade. A swiss champ with wooden scales for this franken one.

It's not new. The serrated blade has some use marks, as has the bit driver. The inline philips is also heavily modified.

How many SAKs have been used in building this? At least four it seems.

I'll be trying it next week as EDC, against the XLT.

The dual scissors is weird.

It would have been cool if one of the hooks was an in-line tool.

Is there no awl???

Its whacky and I love it.  Nice trade.  Certainly can't get off the shelf and the SAKs to make this is interesting.  The wrench is a nice touch as are the serrated and PE blade.  The hooks are funny but thats why I love it.  DE scales  :tu:

There is no inline awl.

It's actually a pretty cool toolset. The dual scissors actually work very well when used together.  :D

Next week we'll see how The Duke is holding up at work.
