Beach EDC
on: September 08, 2017, 11:42:50 PM
So I'm heading to the beach for a weeklong family vacation.  Ill be spending time on the beach, by the pool, general exploring, pond fishing with a couple three year olds, grilling, enjoying a few stogies and a few adult beverages.  As much as I would like to invite you all to join us, 1000 MTOers at our place would likely  result in the rental company banning me for life :)

That being said, if you were to come along what MT, pocket knife and flashlight would you bring?  I'm still trying to decide and could use some inspiration.  :multi:

It's all up to you, but I'd recommend something easy to clean and rustproof.   I'm still picking sand from some of my folders from being on a camping trip on a buddy's hunting property near the Clinch River nearly a month ago.  Thus, I'd recommend a fixed blade is the state laws where you'll be allow it.  I used a Mora for most cutting tasks, but had two Vics  for their tools and a Camillus Stockman for finer cutting/whittling.  The Craftsman still has grit in the pivots.

Lightweight for beach.

MT:
SOG Paratool
Pocket knife:
Many viable options. Some small Spyderco, maybe in H1 or just bright colored Dragonfly or something those lines, Victorinox Solo would be also a good beach EDC, lightweight and functional.
Light:
Small flashlight with SOS mode would be adequate, brand is up to you.

 :-\
Leatherman:
Charge TTi, AL, Squirt PS4, Surge, Juice XE6, CS4, S2, ST300, Crunch, OHT, MUT, Rebar, Brewzer, Signal, Raptor, Tool Adapter, Croc, Wave, Style CS, Freestyle, Skeletool RX, Micra, Wingman
SOG:
PPP, PowerLock, SwitchPlier 2.0, Paratool, PowerAssist, Reactor, CrossCut, PowerPlay
Gerber:
FliK, MP600 ProScout, MP600 blunt, Dime, MP-1, Diesel, MP400
Bahco:
MTT151, MTT051, MTT121
Knives:
Spyderco PM2, Tatanka, Bug, ZT 0452CF, CS Recon1XL, Benchmade 940-1 and 482
SAKs:
Too many to list here...

Vic Compact is my go to for the beach/pool...only time a cork screw is a must for me.  If away for a week, I accompany with a aa clicky light (usually go smaller with my EDC light, but feel like it gets more use on vacation), and a full size multitool that usually sits in my bag unusued (but if you do need it there are likely few other tools around, so it better be robust...I go with a MUT with Swisscard scissors in one of the bit slots, and the punch shaped in to a small flathead). Have a blast!

When pockets are scarce, I'd have my neck lanyard with Alox Rambler, Ti AAA light, telepen, and a few other goodies on. I'd probably want a Wenger Traveller or maybe a Compact for general lightweight pocket carry, and a Vic Spirit in the equation somewhere for all those more interesting life challenges that seem to pop up when you're away from home  ;)

Have fun  :tu:

I don't carry much to the beach itself but I usually go much lighter weight carry for vacation :tu: Just take something smaller to the beach (Classic or Executive) but take a bigger MT (Wave or Rebar) with you for emergency fixing of stuff to your rental :salute: Take a good light with you as this does help when walking on the beach at night and for trips out to your car getting stuff you may have forgotten :tu:

Also have a great trip :tu: :like:

I just came back from Hawaii, spent days on beaches, feeling naked as TSA prevented me bring anything on the plane.

I am in process building something to get around that.

I'd bring an alox SAK as it would be easier to clean if it falls on the beach sand. I think a Pioneer X will do just fine.

I hope you enjoy the family vacation!

I learned the hard way to put them in a ziplock bag. Even if they don't get wet the sand gets into the pivots. Cheers!

I use a Bahco (Mora). I can easily attach it to my swimming suit and dive or swim to those rocks for seashells.
Other than that, I use my usual EDC, with Spirit and accessories, but I always add, when leaving the city, the Wenger Ranger Hunter. I find that nature needs bigger tools than the ones on the Spirit and the Swisschamp and it has greater tolerances, because I can easily clean the sand that gets in the big layer gaps. Whittling random seawoods I find is an old groovy habbit of mine, and the Ranger is comfortable and capable to do it. But the smaller SAKs will help with broken nails, sewing, eating, etc. I recently tightened the door of my son's Hyundai Matrix and the central screw had seasalt on it, after 14 years of getting as near a beach.
Light? Any would do. I now use the Nitecore SRT9. It does it all. It is funny to throw different colors on the sea and see the reaction of the little fishes (they panic on white, but stay calm on other colors). When stargazing, I'll use the red and when reading I will find the exact point of white light I feel comfortable with. It is brutal, but, funny, to throw 2000 lumens of light at the sky, as a beacon.
Finally, a pair of good binoculars. I always carry the Nikon Monarch 7 ED 8x30 anyway, but if there are seabirds other than seagulls, I will carry the Zeiss Conquest 8x42. If their is interesting flora and microfauna, then the Pentax Papilio 6x21 and if there is stargazing to be done, the Canon 12x36 and 18x50 IS. With my Seibert Emoskop and the Docter 8x21 with +10 lens, I enjoy the microscopic vew of sand, in situ.
Last but not least, I like to have a Tangerine sorbet casually, when lying lazy at the seashore.

I would attach it to your belt loop or employ some other method to keep it from getting lost in the sand.

Sun-cream and a bug spray .

Spyderco Dragonfly H1 sounds like the perfect knife for that, maybe combine it with a Classic.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

My recommendation would be for a Sears 4-way screwdriver on your keys and a simple AAA flashlght, whether the Fenix E01, E05, or Maglite Solitaire LED.  I second everyone who says sand gets into nooks and crannies, so knives stay in my hotel room.

Honestly, though, if you're going to get into the water, all I take then is a towel, sunscreen, my room key, water, and flip flops. You want to have fun without worrying about your stuff being stolen or damaged.

Lots of good advice here.  Thanks everyone.  I think I've got it figured out.   Salt for swim time.  Skipper for fishing duty.  Cigar 79 for, well, cigars and cutting limes/opening bottles/everyday SAK stuff. Ultratac to keep the 79 company.   UC35, Surge and F1 for the car/pack. Did I forget anything?

Looks good to me but better leave the Surge in the car as just being near salt water can/will rust it.

I usually clip the Spyderco Salt 1 in the pocket of my swim suit.  That thing really does not rust.  In salsmurfer or pool water.

I am heading for a beach vacation next week, too.
For beach activities I am taking a small BO neckknife plus a modified black MP400. Sand should not be an issue since I can take the MP400 apart afterwarts and its plierhead is loose enough to shake out most of the sand. Should cover everything needed.
