74mm mod: Ambassador + Pocket Tool Chest
on: September 13, 2017, 07:25:33 PM
I finally received my PTC and started fiddling around. I came up with this layout.
Everything works "out of the box". No grinding done at all. ::)

If no other thought comes to mind, I'll peen it this way.

Excellent! :2tu:

That's pretty much the way I was thinking of going, but I don't have a non-SD Vic file .... or did you use the one from the PTC?
Glad to hear there was no redrilling or tang modifications needed. Was this all just using the backsprings from the Exec? Are all the nail nicks accessible?

This file is from the MoneyClip scale donor.

For the PTC-Layer (awl, sd & cap lifter) I used 1 fat spring and two thin springs from the Executive.

The deal with these countered springs is: There are two different styles, those who have a pin hole on one end and those who float entirely.
Luckily, the springs of the Executive are all you need.

I have a small Vic nail file left over. If you need it, send me a PM.

Thanks buddy

I'll have a crack at it as soon as I get my scale materials through (I'm going to try to be a little ambitious with the scales). As both the combo tool and SD file work on the same size flat heads, and both work on PH#2, I might have a go at reworking it a bit to see if I can get it to suit a PH#1. I was a little nervous about "sacrificing" one of my only two PTCs for this, but now having seen yours, those fears have gone  :tu:

It's done. I did a last minute swap and replaced the awl with large file. All nicks are perfectly accessible. No regrinding necessary.

Donors:
Executive: Liner, Tools, Springs
MoneyClip: Scales, Spring
Pocket Tool Chest: Tools

Oh, so you went for both nail files? That's interesting  :o

I think I'll stick with the awl when I build my Executive Tool Chest. Good as the long nail file is, I do like the PTC awl for poking at stuff without damaging drivers or blades. Mine won't be as effective as yours at filing stuff other than fingernails, but for me the awl is too cool for me to omit it  :salute:

Great job there, crackout  :tu: Will this be frequent carry, or was it just a fun project?

No, I went for the small blade.
I figuered, I have more need for the small blade than the awl (opening packages, non food-related cutting work etc.). The PTC awl is blunt so I would have needed to sharpen it.

This is my EDC. Everthing larger than 74mm is too bulky for me nowadays.

Ah, ditching the small file too makes more sense.  :tu: I'd be really interested to hear how you get on with it after you've carried it a while

After exclusively EDCing this thing for almost 7 months I can safely say: this the island-SAK for me.
Almost zero bulk in the pocket and all daily tasks I face can be done with it.

What a great mod!  I love the 74mm size of the Executive, but the lack of opener and screwdriver has always bugged me and so I rarely carry mine.  I may attempt a similar mod...
