93mm with scissors, recommendations please
on: September 17, 2017, 02:10:30 PM
Since Fartobucket robbed us of so much reference material, I thought it would be easier to just ask ...  :P :D

I'm considering building a (non-standard) 93mm knife with scissors, and trying to get my head around the options for doing it with smooth (no gap) backspring. Obviously there is now the Pioneer X to purloin them from, but I recall some people being unhappy with nail nick issues - though I'm unsure what those issues are. Secondly, there's the Solo backspring which would take more work, but cost less money (I already have spare 91mm scissors), and I can't find any photos of what work is involved.

Can anyone shed light on these two please? The nail nick (and any other) issues on the Pioneer X, and a "how to" for the Solo backspring approach.  :salute:

Cheers

My Jalox is based on the PX... I did swapped the PX scissors with one from a 91m SAK... This is because of the nail nick position... Although the PX scissors just need some getting used to, I still went with the swap... Afterall, the intention was to build a SAK that fits your needs 100%.

Scissors just needed the pivot hole enlarged...

Couldn't help you with the Solo backspring approach though... Hopefully others can shed light...

Is the nail nick awkward to get at on the X due to other tools, or is it just that it's the opposite side to the 91's and therefore "wrong" (counter-intuitive)?

In my case, it's just on the opposite side...

Absolutely  :tu:

I now just need to weigh this up against the lower cost, but higher work involvement of the Solo backspring option

Anyone got any insights/experience into the Solo backspring route?

Just found this...

Apparently in the pre-PX days, the Solo route was the favourite...

Cost wise, materials needed are a Pioneer/Farmer and Solo... Compared to just dismantling a PX?

Very interesting  :salute:

I already have spare scissors, brass sheet, a spare Pioneer blade spring (would need to create a scissor rest), Pioneer Harvester, and Pioneer Pruner. I'm probably not skilled enough to make a decent looking splice of Pioneer spring with 91mm scissor rest as a "kitchen table project" (no workshop access), but I might be able to fudge the Solo backspring well enough

Thanks again, certainly food for thought

Definitely on the right track there... scissor rest from 91mm scissor spring? Spring material is soft... should be no problem even with manual filing I think...

Good luck with your project... don't forget to share pics afterwards...

I've got a couple of other projects I want to do first, just getting plans in place for what I need to buy and when for each project

You only need to make two changes to the Solo spring to make it work with scissors: remove a little of the corner of the pad on the end of the spring to allow the handle to slide up the ramp when closing, and bend the spring slightly to increase the closing snap.

Here's a shot of the unmodified spring with scissors with the material to remove marked in black:

You can see that scissors are sitting too high - remove just enough material to bring the scissors tip down into the liners, and make sure that the end of the handle slides smoothly up onto the pad.  You're aiming for a smooth transition between the surfaces - two tangential radii - if you can.

You don't need to bend the spring much - just a few degrees extra between the centre pivot and the free end will be enough.
