The wierdest MT I have seen.
on: September 18, 2017, 03:30:39 AM
Bought this baby about 9 years ago and finally dug it out of storage after I moved back to AL. It has been stored away for six years in a box with antique dominoes. For the life of me I have no idea why it was not with my knives.  :ahhh It is a Western States Boulder, Colorado pocket axe/pocket knife. It is awkward and not something I'd edc, but it is kind of cool in a strange useless way. Has anyone else ever seen one of these?

Definately creative even if a bit useless.

I've seen at least one other example of that knife before; for some reason I keep stumbling across US-made folding survival machetes wherever I go, too; I thought they were supposed to be rare.

How big is it?
Approx. 6" closed and 12" open with the axe. About 10" with the knife opened.
Thank you Douglas and Sazabi!

Maybe for twigs and tiny branches. Or as captain spaulding said, for pencils.
Yes, it could be used to baton pencils!

Lot of makers have made these suckers over the years ,but this is the first Western one I've seen. They're interesting, but I don't exactly think the backspring would take chopping.  These were made for processing game, but even then I don't think an axe is a good tool to be folding.

That axe head seems awlfully small for a 12" long axe.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

Yeah, the "axe" head is absurdly useless, because of its' size. But, I guess IF you REALLY needed something and had NOTHING else, then it would maybe be a little better than nothing? On the plus side, it has a pretty nice carbon steel blade, if you could hold the handle with the "axe" tucked in. :D

Does it LOCK???

:D I think it's kind of cool but the design needs to be more ergonomic and functional.   :D

No locks and an anti-ergonomic design. This bad boy should come in a sheath with a lot of band-aids included. It is made like a regular pocket knife, but with a tiny axe.  :multi:

Yikes   :ahhh   I just got an image in my head of me holding the bottom half of the handle and swinging it like a tomahawk only to accidentally strike a metal cable or something on the top half of the handle a couple inches above my grip -- Sending the axe head swinging into the closed position making short work of my fingers.   :-\

A highly plausible scenario!
Too bad it is too old to have all the safety warnings engraved on the handle.  :D

You know, now that I think about it, I believe either Rough Rider or Marbles (probably Marbles) makes a modern version of this knife.

That's an interesting one.
I posted a Remco branded variant with a fishing gaff a while back.

Yours looks to be more useful than the axe,  but still not up to modern standards. I like the fishing oriented toolset on yours though. Pretty neat!

I know I've seen a couple of these around, but it strikes me as a less practical version of the Marbles Game Buster;
