What's that tool on a 1942 Victoria?

Do you recognize that peculiar shield shaped tool between the pruning and the main blade?
What was that for? I wonder.

It's a fleam, used as a bleeder for animals (and sometimes people too).

That's reasonable too. Why would you bleed an animal. Snake bites? Local shepherds used Agave thorns to do that after snake bite. Then the used thorns would be thrown away because there would be poison left on them.
For bleeding people they used straight razors (barber's razor), or leeches (bloodsuckers).

Yeah, definitely a fleam. It seems to have been a feature on many of the older Sheffield knives too. The fish tickler of the 1850's  :P

Unlike the marginally useful fleam, I have actually taken hooks out of fish with the fish tickler.  :D

You should use a special palmheld razor and collect the blood inside a hoplon (circular shield).
