How do you replace the hook with an awl?
on: September 19, 2017, 05:00:27 PM
Flirting with the idea of attempting my first sak mod. I've seen an awl in place of the hook on many mods, but don't remember every hearing the specifics about what this entails (maybe even with a pic or two). Is it just a washer, is the tool or back spring reshaped?

Any one feel like laying down some knowledge?

I just tried fitting together some bits. You'll need a washer for the awl, of what thickness I cannot say, but aside from that it seems a drop in fit.
You'll have a big gap between the tip of the hook and the spring, due to how it curves to make space for the hooky bit of the hook, but snap and nail nick height seem to be fine.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Thanks Pablo. That's encouraging. Will report back if/when I give it a shot.

A simple awl drop in will not suffice as there will be less tension on the springs... Need to slightly bend the backspring...

Hmmm. That sounds like something that I definitely have the potential to mess up. Bend it how, like down towards the awl so that its more flat on the backtool side?

Bend the area where it meets the hook pivot upwards (just a bit)... bend it to much, scissors will have strong snap but awl will be hard to open...

It’s a trial and error thing until everyhting is just right...

I think Syph007 shared a pic description of it in another thread... just can’t remember which one...
