The Ultimate Contest: Victorinox vs Leatherman
on: September 19, 2017, 08:44:05 PM
This report just in from our correpondent Jack Fenderblade, of a fierce contest between a Leatherman Squirt and Victorinox MiniChamp! The winner-takes-all battle had been announced a while ago, and we now receive reports that it has just begun. We will be providing live coverage of the fearsome event. Both sides have announced that prisoners would not be taken. Stay tuned for more...

Jeah, Jack here. I can see that the contestants have lined up on either side of the playing field, and are about to set off. Who will reach the longest stretch first? Bets are on the Leatherman due to its slightly bigger girth but I have it on good authority that the Victorinox claims it has fielded a secret weapon...

(sound of a loud bang in the distance)

Yeah, they have set off, They're pretty evenly matched as far as I can see from here...

Uh oh, the Leatherman is hitting a snag. Is this the secret weapon the Victorinox has been bragging about? Or is it just that the Leatherman is held up by its slightly bigger size? Stay tuned for the latest developments...

Some good steering has freed the Leatherman from the snag, good work Squirt. The Squirt is picking up speed again and is gaining slightly on the MinChamp...

In a neck-to-neck race both contestants are getting close to the finish. It's nerve wracking. It looks like they're going for a photo finish...

They did it! In a perfect display of symmetry both have managed to reach the other at the same time and atthe exact mid-way point! Phenomenal!

Time for my snack now.

Don't worry, losing our mind is quite normal for us Dutch people.

It's like having that 1 crazy neighbour you just greet in the morning because you're scared he might terrorise you if you look at him the wrong way :ahhh

I'm of two minds over this... which is why one prerequisite for losing one's mind without crippling damage is fulfilled in my case, I guess... >:D

On a ((just) slightly) more serious note :D I did notice some differences in handling of the two pairs of scissors.

Victorinox MiniChamp:
+ Feel, finish, snap of the tool better; tool generally better to handle in scissors mode due to smaller size (extension into plane of the cut limited)

Leatherman Squirt:
+ Sharp, maximum use of available space, availability in a small plier-based multitool
- Slightly awkward to use in scissors mode due to the bulk of the tool extending into the plane to be cut

So on balance, although this did not impact the speed of cutting through the sturdy material of the walnut bag, I would have to give the handling and quality win to Victorinox. Extending this knowledge to the bigger tools would not drastically change my opinion, I think. For one, the same geometrical principles apply. And we all know that Vic generally has superb finish.

I'll still carry the Squirt though - the pliers are unbeatable, given the size.

Good writeup sir D_T!

As much I love small Victorinoxes, MiniChamp never clicked with me... but I love Squirt!
That would be my pick, those pliers are just so handy!
Scissors then... well, MiniChamp is just a notch comfortable to use.
So I would go with Classic... or Ambassador. Or Style CS.

Good show.  I would have also thought the SAK would easily be tops.  My Squirt that see regular carry is a scissorless P4.
