Backside 91mm chisel - has anyone found much use for it?
on: September 21, 2017, 09:20:44 PM
The backside chisel that comes on 91mm 5 layer+ SAKs seems useless to me. I only have one SAK with the tool, my CT41. When I tried chiseling some wood with it the other day I couldn't get it to do much of anything. The rest of the SAK is in the way making it impossible to get anything but a steep angle on the wood. And the tool itself is at an awkward T-handle position and doesn't lock into place well. It fairly easily slips either way in its housing and does not stay straight when under any force.

But that is just my limited experience with this tool. I was wondering if anyone here has found a way to use it effectively for anything.

I agree with you GD - If you want a chisel function on the SAK (like the brilliant one on the Spirit) you can put an edge on the caplifter - it makes for an excellent chisel you can actually use.

Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

Every SAK that I can think of that comes with the chisel has a hook as well.

Yep, did this and it's pretty badass.

I agree, the backside chisel as do awl the backside tools, save the corkscrew  :D, close too easily.

Yeah I must agree. Despite my continued attempts to reliably replace its functionality with the can opener, the corkscrew is the only backside tool that really earns its keep.

I'm in the minority in that I've used mine numerous times on the small canoes I whittle out.  My favorite is the Swisschamp.  It gives you plenty of girth to grip with!

I recently used it to widen the opening in my doorway so the lock grabs in better.
The door closes like it should now :tu:

This is good to know, because I was pondering attempting the same thing with one of our guest doors.

Success!

I just fixed our stubborn guest door using the SC's chisel, pliers and phillips. Shuts perfectly now!

The chisel is a great tool! However, the placement on the Swiss Champ is not optimum for use. I much prefer the chisel on the Spirit X.
