Bear and Sons Knife BC297BBR. Thoughts??
on: September 24, 2017, 12:39:23 PM
I have a brand new BC297BBR in the box. I chose it last year as my 10 year anniversary gift at work.

The model is now discontinued. Is it worth anything or am I safe to just start using the crap out of it.

I have been thinking of getting a Buck 110, but if the BC297BBR will work, I’ll just use it.

Thoughts??

No idea of the commercial value, but I say use it anyway  >:D

They're usually not collector's knives, unless they're made for Moore Maker.

I say use it, even though it does have a little sentimental value, being it was for your 10th year work anniversary. The only issue I have with Bears is bad quality, bad to the level of unsafe.  However, they're traditionals are better quality than their tacticals or MTs, all I've tried from them.

The only Bear I've had any luck with is a somewhat older fixed blade skinner. Never used that 110 clone, but frankly if I was going to actually use a knife in that style, I'd just go ahead and get the Buck. Highly functional quality, great warranty, and the 110 is very affordable. I got one on sale at Dick's for $22 a couple years ago, and in general they go for under $40.
That Bear looks fairly nice though. Wouldn't be a bad one to display.

That's a pretty knife you have there. I think it would make a nice companion on your belt. If it could speak to you, it might say "FEED ME... Give me something to cut!!"

If sentimental value is a consideration then carry and use it sparingly.  If monetary value is the consideration then I tend to determine a upper amount of replacement I'm comfortable for replacement.  Monetary value however doesn't tend to keep me from using things.  Mostly cause I dont tend to buy things I cannot "afford" to replace.  In your case it was a thank you for 10 years service so......

I don't think I helped did I

I think I’ll just go for the “true” Buck 110 and just leave this one in the box.

Won’t hurt my feelings to leave it there and get a Buck. Only since the knife I have is no longer made. That and being my Anniversary gift, I just use it sparingly and get a good quality Buck 110.

Sounds like a good choice. The ones at Walmart are only like $27 or so, mine was. And, the sheath that came with the Bear is a good alternative to the crappy nylon one most Walmart 110s come with.  I used the  sheath that came with the 1970s 110 I inherited from my great-uncle.

That's not a very catching model name.
I'd say use it, it was made to be used after all!
But as Aloha said, if you're sentimental about it, use it sparingly. I myself would like to own an extra SAK to avoid losing my precious one.

Nice!  :tu:

That's a different sheath than the POS nylon one my 2015 110 came with. Wonder if it's any better.

While I don’t normally like nylon sheaths, this is made nice. However, I don’t like the belt loop. Lets the knife ride too high for my preference.

I’d prefer a leather sheath that allows the knife to ride lower, like this one...

I don't have any newer examples to say how they make them nowadays, but my old leather Buck sheaths are great. I have a 1990 (I think) Buck 119 with a really nice leather sheath.

I would just use it and make some memories with it buddy! I have a few Bear and Son knives, and the nice thing about them is they're not too expensive, so you don't have to be afraid to use them. That knife that you have is to good not to use :tu: However, if you want a good work lockback, either the 110, or the Case Hammerhead are great choices, I have both of them and can't think of a bad thing to say about them

Hear's a pic of the two together for comparison. The Buck is a little bit more friendly on the wallet of the two :D

Case makes great knives, and I do like the Hammerhead. But I think the 110 has better ergonomics. Given that and the price difference, I'd take the 110 for a user any day  :tu:
