Project 3 - The Chisel
on: September 24, 2017, 06:54:29 PM
When I purchased my Vic Ranger, I never expected to use the chisel. To me it was a useless blade. However, one should never say never. I volunteer at a museum and we had some metal tins, approximately 80-90 years old, some of which we could not get open. We tried the smallest screwdrivers that we could find to no avail. At that point I thought of my SAK and then thought of the chisel. It slipped right in the crack between the top and bottom of the tin and with a slight twist of the knife, the seal was broken. We were able to open the tins, remove the specimens with no damage. All I had to do was a quick run of the chisel over a stone and it was as good as new. Chalk one up for the versatility of the SAK.

Good one Doc!

Reminds me of a recent thread >> https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,73996.0.html

I prefer the chisel to the small screwdriver on the back, fortunately the SwissChamp and Ranger have both.  :tu:

Good thinking Doc!

That is the beauty of the tools on a SAK. They can be used for lots of other things besides their original intended use.

Great use case! I am very partial to the chisel. When deciding whether or not to get the Spirit X, the chisel sealed the deal. Having the chisel on the Ranger and Swiss Champ is a compelling feature!

Yeah, the more I look at the tool, the more I warm up to it. That's awesome how it was just the right shaped piece of metal to get you cleanly in those tins. I gotta say, volunteering at a museum sounds kinda fun. I bet it gives you loads of fun opportunities to use your SAKs!

nice unexpected use  :like:

I only used the chisel on my SAKs to pop up open the back panel of my smartphones through the years, the cover just pops off with a slight, simple push and twist movement

Sounds like buckets of fun!
Sneak over with the SAK and put a few tool marks on an old, fossilized bone.
...keep 'em guessing.
