Charge TTI- real deal?

I bounce between my SAKs and my Skeletool for EDC but I'm finding I'd like to have a more robust tool with more functionality on my belt. I'm looking at both the Charge AL and Charge TTI. For the additional money, I'm leaning TTI.

I haven't purchased a Leatherman for a few years so I'd appreciate any insight and opinions on the TTI. It has just about all the tools I'd need on a multitool.

I've never owned the Charge AL or the Skeletool as to give you an appreciation of the difference or how will the Charge provide you more than the Skeletool besides the obvious difference.
But what I can say is that really like the Charge TTi, is the one I usually EDC and have always been and performed as good as it looks like.

Thank you. The TTI is definitely good looking and I'm certain the tools are typical Leatherman top notch.

I guess the main question is whether or not it is a legitimate value. Is the high(ish) cost worth it?

I can better understand your question now. I would say a definitive Yes, but no one could could understand your budget and priorities better than yourself.

The tool is really comfortable, practical, durable (I have had mine for several years if I count my first TTi which was stolen from me and my second one which I am using now), and never felt it wasn't worth it. I be never regretted my decision to buy it and to replace it when I lost it the first time.
Just make sure you add the pocket clip or carry it on a belt sheath so it can be protected.

I'm definitely of the mind that one gets what one pays for. My Skeletools (I have two- bought one to replace one I thought I lost, only later to be delighted to find the first!) are a tremendous value. My Swiss Champ SAK isn't inexpensive but it's highly utilitarian.

The Swiss Champ is a great set of tools for light duty work, which is truthfully fine 90% of the time. That said, robust pliers are always useful, and the Leatherman pliers are usually more than sufficient. I honestly think the only thing I'd miss carrying a TTI vs. a SAK are the tweezers and toothpick, which probably just means I need to get a Classic SAK for unobtrusive pocket carry.

And I'd definitely get the pouch for the TTI and possibly the pocket clip too, just for the extra option.

I like the feel in the hand of the TTi.  I think it might be the texturing of the scales which seems to give extra grip.

If you ever plan on pocket clip carry avoid the Charge AL. The knurled screw tops are a pain with the pocket clip because they sit proud of the surface and make the gap so small for the pocket clip that you can't sit it all the way down on anything but the thinnest material. Go for the TTi with the recessed screws if you ever intend to pocket carry, though personally I'd save a load of money and buy a wave (or a 2nd hand TTi).  Other than the seatbelt hook on the serrated blade, and the main blade steel, the loadout is the same and for a lot less money.

Ergonomically, I prefer the Wave

Huge fan of the Wave so when I got a deal on my TTi I jumped at it.  I loved the idea of the S30 main blade.  I also really loved the feel as greg mentions.  The Titanium is nice but doesn't lighten the tool at all since they are thin scales.  The gut hook on the serrated blade at the time wasn't a big deal.  The one thing I wasn't thrilled about was the cap crimper plier head.   I had no need for it and I felt like it would weaken the plier in how I use them. 

I later got a Charge Al.  Pretty nice looking tool  The main blade is 154CM which is really nice.  The black aluminum is really nice.    What I am a little worried about is the badge thing.  I wondered if it would eventually fall off.  Glad to see the regular plier head on this one. 

Between the Wave, Charge TTi, and Charge Al there is no clear best.  Functionally the all perform the same.  I find it really comes down to how much you want the higher end materials and blade steel as well a the look.  The tools are the same in functionality.  I stopped carrying my TTi after a week or so due to the cap crimper plier head.  I also stopped carrying my AL for no other reason that I worried about that badge coming off.  I stuck with my Wave and thought that was that. 

I was looking through my tools one day and came across both my TTi and AL and thought it was a waste to keep these awesome tools hid away.  I am happy to report that I carry my TTi daily and enjoy the heck out of it.  I also decided to carry my Charge AL which I am also happy to report I am thoroughly enjoying.  I carry them in sheaths on my belt.  Funny enough my Wave is now relegated to back up.  I don't worry about the badge on the AL or the cap crimper plier head.  Neither is an issue and the gut hook is a nice addition.   

I'll end with this,  there is a undeniable gratification in carrying a tool with nicer materials.  Sure its only  scales and main blade on the TTi but still.  I find enjoyment in that so they make sense to me.  In the past I'd say get a Wave and save the money.  Now I'm more inclined to say spend the money and enjoy the tool you want.  Please note my TTi is the older one, the scales are different than the newer ones.

I admit, I'm a sucker for the S30V blade of the TTI, otherwise, I'd go with the Wave. I'd probably go with the Wave even if the blade was 154CM (a utility steel I also love). For a tool that I plan to carry everyday, I don't mind the extra $40 or so bucks.

There are several mods to add both to the Wave and Charges. From what I've read, if you get the Leatherman tweezers with the crimped end bent at an angle (vs the ones with the rolled over end) they fit into the Leatherman without doing any mods.

I'd say stay away from TTi unless you have small hands for AL or Wave. It is slightly narrower closed. Otherwise it is not worth extra money at all. I also prefer ALs and Waves blades to S30V.

In my honest opinion, get the TTI. The Aluminium scales on the ALX are very soft. It will dent easily when dropped. Extremely bad choice of material on a hard use tool..

There are deals to be had on the TTi.  We've had fellas offer up some great ones here on MTO.  I am still a sucker for my Wave but the more I carry my TTi the more I am enjoying it.  I do like the Ti scales and feel.  I have my S30 blade tuned up and wicked sharp.  I haven't had to do anything to it in a long while.  I also enjoy carrying my AL.  Its really nice looking and Mr Whippy ( Moderator )  is a great example of someone who puts his AL to some hard work.  His has held up quite well.   I think he has an ALX but I'm not certain.  He lives on a farm so I'm sure his has seen all kinds of work.  Point is these tools can take a lot.  In the end like I've said, its up to you and what looks and feels right.  If its about a great tool and saving some cash,  the Wave is the clear winner.  Otherwise, buy once/cry once is what I'm told.  With the 25 year warranty you've got nothing to loose.
