Improved explorer
on: September 27, 2017, 08:06:53 PM
Hi! After many hours of drooling in this part of the forum I finally took the step to make a mod myself. I have always wanted to love the explorer but for me, living with forests all around me it did not make sense to have a scissor and no woodsaw. So I changed the scissors for a saw.

I had a lot of fun and forgot to take pics along the way.. But I'm happy and ready to take on the world.

The saw came from a used camper and the explorer is mine since before.

It's awesome!  :like:

I've found that preening to achieve good snap and making sure that it won't come apart enough to introduce a wobble in the tools eventually is the hardest part of SAK modding for me.
How did yours go?
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

And Pabs Hun, it's PEENING, not preening.  :pok:

Thanks! It went well and more convenient than I thought. The hardest part for me was figuring out what goes where when I removed the tape and tools started to fall out.. But I think steel wire through the holes is the thing for next time.. Then I can remove it layer by layer in my own pace and not by gravity

Thanks! I kind of do that to all of my SAK's gives much more reach.

No name yet, but expedition is close by and as far as I know there is no sak with that name yet. And when going out in the forest with the kids we always call it an expedition and looks for things as well as learning

Great job! Just curious why you did not keep the scissors and add a saw?

Thanks! Then I would cross the 4 layer mark and that is my border for thickness I like in a sak. If I want bigger I can use my spirit x or lm wave.

And I usually keep either a classic SD or a style ps on my keychain small scissors but better than nothing

I'm not sure you can use the word 'improved' when you remove the scissors, particularly if you add the saw in its place.  Maybe this should be called an Impaired Explorer. :P

Haha to some maybe. To me it is improved to others impaired. But isn't that what's so awesome with taking something that is good, changing the things you don't like and suddenly it's great? And the fact that we are allowed to think differently about it

Also, with scissors included, it would be yet another Woodsman mod. This is more interesting.  :tu:

The hardest part for me was figuring out what goes where when I removed the tape and tools started to fall out.. But I think steel wire through the holes is the thing for next time..

This, this, this and a thousand times, THIS! Bits falling out unexpectedly was a shock for me too... The wire idea is wise!

Making a tool exactly how you want & need it is exactly what modding is all about, so very well done

Feels good that I'm not alone.. Even though I have read about it before I took it apart I was still surprised..

To grind it down? You won't regret it and it still works with cans

No, I used the whole saw layer from a camper so the scissors, backspring and hooked have a vacation in my parts box
