Differences in scales over the years... what's the use of this?

Hi all,
Taking a good look at the new sapphire SC and comparing with the older ruby CT41 I notice the former has what looks like a separate compartment to the left and pointing slightly downwards. The compartment has no exit. Opening it up would probably make available some space for needles or the like. Anyone have an idea what this is meant for?

I have an older Ruby CT34 (old bit rack) and it hasn't got that extra compartment...

It's the slot the Traveler scales have for the (small) tweezers as it fits all scale tools in the back one. On regular Plus scales the slot is closed as there is no tool to fit there.
Simple economy on the back plus scale injection mold i guess, fot regular plus scales they just plug that slot so it's closed. Also it helps with scale rigidness, with the two ribs there  ;)  and probably feels less "hollow" too

Ehhhh.... am I the only one to think about opening up that slot and getting a small pair of tweezers, then throwing the large pair out in favour of this Firebug tbat is being talked about elsewhere? :think:

But will this Ferro rod fit in the tweezer slot? It's made for the toothpick slot as far as I know.  :think:

The only difference is not on these slots but on the angle of the head of both toothpick and tweezers.

It would be nice if both possibilities were available for the Ferro rod. You can choose then if you rid of your toothpick or your tweezers
