Welcome to the Chuck Yeager challenge. We’ve named it the Chuck Yeager challenge because legendary test pilot and fighter ace, General Yeager, is believed to have carried a Victorinox Executive as an EDC when camping, fishing, and test-piloting. Apparently it was all the knife this legend ever needed! With an example like the one Chuck set, how can we not give it a try?

There are a few hours left before the challenge officially kicks off; it's not too late to join up.

Here’s the premise of the challenge: We all carry and use a Victorinox Executive (or Director) on a daily basis for 30 days, 01 through 30 October, local time. The Executive is presumed to be the primary knife used and carried for the duration of the challenge.

Each participant shall make a daily post with thoughts, observations, and a photo of their Executive (or Director). If, for any reason, another knife or tool needs to be used to accomplish a task that the Executive can’t do, the challenge participant shall share why the Exec wasn’t up to the task.

We’ll all support each other as we briefly live the life of a Victorinox Test Pilot and push the performance envelope of this quirky, but seemingly capable, knife of legend and lore. This should be fun and...epic!

I’m starting this challenge thread now in case the New Zealanders get a jump on things since their clocks run fast and upside down. And, what the heck, a few of us have already started carrying our Executives.   

Still 29 September here, but, to get my participation started, here's the Executive I'll be using during this challenge:



I figured that since it's a pocket knife, I'd file off the key chain attachment. Feels pretty good in the hand, even if it's a bit on the small side (compared to what I usually carry).

Good morning folks! Time for my morning drink mix  . I love the Exec's scissors.

I love the quote.  I printed it, and will be hanging it on the wall at work.  I also read it to my kids and wife.
 
Oh.  That was an "Executive" decision.

Post-Costco trip depackaging operation, folks. The Executive did fine.


By the way, the Executive works much better in jeans pockets compared to my usual Explorer.

Oct 01:

Used the long blade to cut up strawberries for breakfast. The 74mm blade might just be the perfect strawberry processing tool.



When it came to making toast....not so much, used a big bread knife. Just keepin' it real. 

Started early, and opened a bag of mortar to fix a couple brick caps on a wall in the front. Couldn't find my Stanley knife, and everything else is put away for the challenge, so the Exec filled in.

End result. With obligatory Exec shot. Will need a saw to cut the ends off the shims. I doubt the serrated orange peeler is up for the task.

I know my English is not so good, so please excuse me for all the mistakes I will write here (and also in all the threads 😱)

Now, let me present one of the protagonist, it's an Executive that had red scales and received colored ones from an ambassador limited. I purchased the ambassador in a shop near my home, and I'm proud to say that the Executive came from MT Shop! A great union 😀.

Today I used scissor to have a break for me and my kids.

There´s no way I´ll ever partake in a minimalist challenge. Nevertheless, here´s a pic of my Director.

That's right, I took some pads off of the corners and edges of my fireplace hearth. There was still quite a bit of adhesive left over after a couple applications of Goo Gone, soap and warm water. The orange peeler did a decent job of scraping some of the adhesive back off the brick work yesterday morning. Also used a putty knife and finger nails.

Was making some meatloaf this afternoon. I like a little tomato paste in the mix for added Umami  .

October 1st

I specificly bought the Executive for this challenge. I love the look and feel of the SAK. And the black scales are super sexy!
However, this morning I felt a little regret leaving my Handyman at home. We go way back.
But it has to be done, the Handyman gets a month off with the rest of the collection and tbe Exec takes it's place on the keychain.

The Exec rides comfortably in the pocket. It's like I forgot my SAK at home. I'll have to get used to this feeling.

During midday the Exec met it's first challenge. I used the scissors to cut the label off my new chair. It passed with flying colours. Vic scissors are great!

I'm still missing my Handyman, but I'm looming foreward to tomorrow!

I've had this Executive for many years. An old roommate, probably 15 years ago, was about to throw it away. I told him I'd take it because I wanted a change from the old yellow delrin Case stockman I had been carrying since high school. I carried the Executive for probably 8-10 years almost every day, occasionally swapping out for the stockman. This was before I went crazy with accumulating a bunch of knives. Since my boys were born, it has cut up many a hot dog and other assorted snacks and the orange peeler has pryed apart more stuck together Legos than I could count.

Didn't have a lot of use for it today but it did just whittle down a toothpick to extra skinny after dinner.
